There is a bike rack at the Northside station (caddy-corner from PNC Park) which is a good one to suggest to someone who might be new to cycling and wants to commute to downtown via the northside trail but is nervous about riding in traffic. Just ride the trail to PNC Park, then take the ramp up to Mazeroski Way, lock up to the racks which are right at the top of the escalators, and take the free subway to downtown.

Yes, Mt. Lebanon has a rack. Dormont Junction also has one.

Dormont Jct has a tiny one, but there’s space for about 40 on the downhill side of the station.

There is a bike rack at the Ikea superstop. Someone who lives within biking distance can bike to the stop, lock up their bike, and hop on the 28X or 29 to get to their place of work in Downtown or Oakland. I would think a sizable number of Pitt students work out that way because of the convenient one-bus trip to and from Oakland. After work, they can do some shopping at the nearby Market District, Target, or Wal-Mart on bike prior to getting on the bus back to Oakland. Once they get off the bus in Oakland, they can bike to their apartment in the residential sections of Oakland, Shadyside, East Liberty, or even Aspinwall if they don't mind crossing the Highland Park Bridge.

Gateway and First Ave also have convenient bike parking.

RE; the Ikea superstop, not real pleasant bikeable connections from there to many of the places you mention other than Ikea itself. Market District in particular being quite a challenge to anyone not fairly road-capable, I wouldn't want anyone to get overly optimistic about that. The very good wine & spirits store is quite handy, right across the road. :)

Several of the stations on the West Busway have racks. Library Station and nearby businesses should have some places to park bikes due to proximity to the Montour Trail. I go to the Subway on Library Rd. just southeast of West Library sometimes. When I go there prior to getting on the trail, I exit the T at West Library, turn left onto Library Rd., and lock my bike to the wooden deck slats on the ramp. I guess motorists around there are accustom to seeing cyclists because of the Montour Trail and T stations. When I leave, I turn right onto Library Rd., left onto Brownsville Rd. and right onto Pleasant St. to access the trail.

Negley Ave. Station on East Busway has a coat-hanger type rack. By the way, is the rack at Gateway a toaster type rack?

I’d have to take a look. Frankly I don’t recall Gateway having any rack. Having a rack at all is one thing. Having the capacity to hold what could be a considerable increase in usage is another. For example, for the roughly 6,000 people who work in U.S. Steel Tower, there is capacity for only about 30 bike racks, and they can use 200. So when I look at an area like Dormont Station, I’m wondering how you’d tie up 25 bikes there. Right now, you can’t.

@Stu, The rack is on the Penn Ave. side of the Gateway Station. Where do you park your bike near the US Steel Building?

Overbrook Shelter on the South Busway also has a coat hanger rack.

Steel Building has a public rack near the sidewalk on the building side of the wall. The underground parking garage has three layers -- green, blue, red -- exclusively for the use of building tenants. The green and red levels have tiny bike racks, each capable of holding 10-15 bikes. Accessed by rolling into the building lobby thru the handicapped door, then getting on one of the two elevators that take you down to parking. I usually go to the blue level and lock to a railing. In a triangular building, there are lots of little nooks and crannies where they could fit 10 bikes at a time, but it's so difficult to get in and out of the place, hardly anyone bikes there. Imagine, racks for 30 for a building with 6,000+ people. Compare that to Union Trust, which has racks for 65 bikes for a building with 500 people. Or the other extreme, the Frick Building has zero racks for 1,000-ish people -- though there is a HealthyRide station there.

On the Trolley Line, Washington Junction (a major stop) has a bike rack.  It needs a paint job (brighter color than gray), but it is there. In Dormont, there is also a hitch type rack in front of Cain's Saloon.  The Trolley Station is just across West Liberty from there.

Last week, I actually saw a few bikes locked up at the South Hills Village T station. Also, the new Ashby apartments advertizment posted in one of the trams.

Located at the South Hills Village T Station

The T provides easy access to Downtown entertainment and shopping, plus award-winnning schools, local museums, and parks are all close at hand. Cutting edge amenities, meticulously-groomed grounds, and a dedicated staff contribute to a higher standard of living.

This is unrelated, but is it easy to get to Grandview Ave. from either South Hills Junction, Boggs or anywhere along the 54 bus line? I know the 40 bus goes there, but it is infrequent and I do not like waiting in line to go on the Incline.

How do you like climbing hills? The easiest climb is from the south, either up Woodruff or Southern, and Southern isn't far from SHJ. There are two inclines, and of the two, the more interesting trip is the Duquesne Incline, IMHO. I've taken a bike up it once. (So did whatshername in "Flashdance", getting to her grandmother's house in Polish Hill, which was actually at South 21st and Sidney.)

I remember climbing Boggs Ave. before. Is Southern Ave., less stressful with less traffic?

If you're using the T, get off at South Hills Junction.  You will have to haul your bike up some stairs, wend your way on some side streets to either Southern or Boggs Avenues, and then on up to Grandview.

Here is a video of trolleybuses in 1991. Skip to 4:02 to see the trolley poles being fixed after a dewiring and to 4:55 to see a cyclist behind the same trolleybus. I am surprised to see a city cyclist in a video from when I was not even two months old. Today, I took the 40 bus to Mt. Washington and rode from the western terminus of Grandview Ave. to Shiloh St. and down Sycamore St. and back to Downtown.

There is a rack across Waverly St. from Roslyn St. Station in Swissvale. I also like this mural.
