Sweet! There are some parts of downtown that have been pretty tough to lock up in since they changed the parking meters. Also, I like the three rivers racks, but it's nice that there are some cheaper racks (these are the staple racks, right?) that the city can install a bajillion of.

Is there a better place to request/suggest bike rack installation? I noticed a major shortage of bike racks on Walnut St in Shadyside, yesterday.

Much appreciated. I also added a comment on the PG article suggesting the Fifth-Grant area as the next place downtown to add a bike facility. We hired an intern yesterday, and seeing my helmet, her first question, at 9am on her first day, was "Where do you park your bike?" We can easily put 50 more spaces to use up here. 3Av/Wood is a long haul from 5Av/Grant.

Also, the goal with the leased area in the 3rd ave garage is to use the money generated from the leases to improve other garages for bikes.

Is the courthouse/old jail complex OK with people locking bikes to the super heavy chain between concrete pillars? A touch further east than would be best, but seems pretty secure as long as they're OK with it, and a lot of chain length that could be locked to by a lot of bikes just fine if they have kickstands to stay upright.

If I pay to use the lockup area on 3Av, does that transfer to being able to use the lockup area in the 7th Street facility? (...and conceivably any other one that gets added...)

No, the 7th St station is privately owned. The 3rd Ave garage one is the Pittsburgh Parking Authority. One other thing about this 3rd Ave location that is cool (but i didn't want to put it in the blog post or press release) is that there is a guard station right next to it, with men's and women's bathrooms. Also, if you do get a lease, there are lockers available inside the fence where you can store your helmet/lights/shoes, etc.

as far as future Parking Authority ones, that's a good idea, and i'll be sure to keep that in mind when(if) the next ones happen. I can't imagine there being a retrofit quite this big in another garage (there's no unused space like this), but i believe 2 garages are slated to be rebuilt, and if this proves successful, they could work bicycle parking into the rebuild.

Just a reminder, if you approach this garage off of 4th Avenue, this drain grate is perfectly aligned to eat your wheel. It is right in front of the entrance. Picture taken Jan 2011. Verified this morning, 13 June 2013.
