yeah, I found the article fairly uninspired as well, especially given its length.
Bike theft discussed on NPR
They briefly interviewed the author of an article on bike theft this afternoon.
He placed GPS units on a few bikes to see where they went. The article is actually pretty blah, but I thought it was good that it was being talked about on the radio.
Could ahve been a kick-ass piece if it was half the length.
It surpised me that the original theives took 17 mintues to get through a cable lock. I'm guessing that must have been areally good cable.
I've thoguht about hiding one of the locators in my guitar case. Trouble is, there isn't really much of a place to hide it.
Mick, that’s why you should play the banjo – no one steals banjos!
Mick, what about peeling back some the case lining?
I got this in the mail last month and the article was entirly to long. The 4 things I got from it were:
Most bike thieves are drug addicts.
Police departments are reluctant to pull officers from robberies or murder investigations to hunt bike thieves.
DAs rarely prosecute bike thieves because the theft does not meet the criteria of a felony.
Ehay and Crappielist is a cesspool of stolen bicycles.
I thought if you wanted to make a joke about musical instruments, you used a viola, e.g., "What's the difference between a violin and a viola? A viola burns longer."
To my knowledge, though, nobody has placed a GPS chip in a viola.
Speaking of which... as someone who has bought a few bikes on craigslist (and browsed a bunch), I don't really see that many that jump out at me and say "stolen!". Am I missing something? Anyone have any suggestion of signs to look for to avoid buying a stolen bike?
Mick, if you use a... I'll call it a shoulder strap... you could sew it under a patch or maybe near a hem or something. Isn't there a little compartment for you to put picks you could put it in?
And I could have sworn that somebody posted a thread on here last year about a stolen banjo. Or accordian. Maybe a mandolin. One of those instruments that should be more common than it is and is on my "I want to try playing around on one some day" list.
If that's the article I'm thinking of... it's more a story than informative. I thought it was an interesting story. For information, not so much. But a nicely written story.
@marko no one steals banjos!
There's a joke where the punchline is, "He comes back to his car, the window is broken, and now there are TWO banjos in the back seat."
I probably will sneak one of those things into the case of my favorite guitar.
BUT, I've had two banjos stolen from me. One - the one that sucked even more than the other one - was found in a pawn shop, though.
OT @Mick are you involved in the Banjo Club?
"The first rule of Banjo Club is..."
