As I was riding home on the bus yesterday, west busway, I overheard 3 completely average looking working women discussing occasionally putting their bikes on the back of their cars, driving to some near town parking, and biking the last leg into town. My heart was warmed. If the bus hadn't been Tokyo-subway-crowded, I would have chatted.
Then it occurred to me that if the busway routes had viable-in-any-way racks, there would be some fairly certain converts. Agghhhh!
Also I realized that I wish I just always had some BikePgh leaflets to hand out.
Bike to work day
it's around the corner! Woohoo. I am hoping the weather magic-8-ball changes its mind back to sunny.
I see a list of biker breakfasts here at car-free-fridays thingy, I'll point people at that?
I see a few bike racks on parked cars along Bingham on the southside. Folks driving to the southside and biking into the CBD, I guess.
For me, everyday is 'Bike to Work' day.... AND I like it!
I would ditch my car tomorrow for the summer if the EBA had bike racks on it
btw... I'll be at the free-breakfast thing on friday at the Katz plaza... it would be nice to meet other fellow-commuters besides the folks at my office. Plus, for people who are or might be doing it for the first time, it might be exciting & helpful to meet people who commute to work every day
So... yeah! Maybe see some of you then!
http://bike-pgh.org/2010/05/ready-set-bike-to-work-day-may-21/
here's all the info and whatnot about where to get the free grub
eppi, A lot, if not all of the EBA busses have racks on them. I have used them a few times.
@erok that should be on the front page... i mean at the top.
yeah. planning on it for tomorrow. was suuuuuuper busy today.
All the events start at 7:30 and I'm already working in my fabric covered box by then.
so excited about the 7:30 start time! finally...
Dare I say it?
Pre-work Breakfast Alleycat?
Edit: The Mount Lebanon location might be a bit too far for me.
I have a feeling my normal parking spot at century building might be taken on friday I am looking forward to seeing how many bikes are out tho.
My only problem is that the breakfast meeting in Mt. Lebanon is that it's late enough that I won't be able to make it, wheeze over Mt. Washington, and still get to work by 8:30.
I'd actually been planning to leave from Mt. Lebo around 6:30ish if anyone going in would like a cycling buddy for the day.
This whole thing makes me want to hit all the breakfast spots, then just take the day off to ride. Would it be corrupt to change it to my personal "Take off work to bike" day?
After all, I do need to prepare for the Flock of Cycles.
@edmonds59: "Bike Instead Of Work Day" has more meaning for us regular commuting types.
@reddan - ditto!
I like the sound of that.
edmonds, i think that's a great idea. glad to be contributing to lower productivity
... at the workplace - higher productivity in the life place
I'm off Friday. I am going to see how many of these I can get to.
"Free Breakfast Alley Cat"
Wow! Assuming I don't have to be in Harrisburg on Friday, I hope to see many of you at the Century Building. I'll have to get there early and stay late for all of you "progressive" breakfasters/vacationers....
How's that song go?
"Iiiii don't wanna work
I just wanna ride on the bike all day"
+1 Stu!
I'll be waiting at our new office at 7:45am on Friday to ride downtown if anyone would like to bike pool.
3410 Penn Ave, 15201
@ Mr D. That sounds fun but if I leave my husband with the kids that early he claims he will not survive... so I'm probably carpooling to the t with my folder like any-old-day.
I don't work Fridays. I am totally snack-hopping. Trashy eh?
love it
But there's an Alleycat that morning!
@ Mr. Destructicity
What's your route to and from Mount Lebo?
@Lou:
I'm thinking down Washington/West Liberty to Potomac, Potomac to Broadway, down Broadway/Beechview to Crane, down Crane to 51, up Boggs, and then working my way over to the 18th Street Extension. (I work near 18th and Carson on the South Side).
In the evening, either reverse that route or, if I'm exhausted, ride down to the Incline and reverse it.
However, I've never done this commute before so I'm open to suggestions.
@Mr. D.
At the top and very end of Boggs Av make the first left after Wyoming. This is Williams St. it’s a nice long hill and at the bottom take a left on to Arlington Av. Be careful of the trolley tracks on Arlington I have dumped my bike on them once. You only have to go a few hundred yards down Arlington and at the first light make the right on Mcardle Rd. This will take you behind South Stadium and to 10th St.
@ Mr. D.
I don't have a great suggestion. Greasefoots sounds fine. Coming down McCardle behind South Stadium is actually a fun approach. Definitely be careful of the tracks on Arlington. In previous threads people talk a lot about combining the ride with the T, but that's only for off peak hours. I can't say I know of any definitive route that is most popular.
There's a group that rides out of Lebo on Saturday mornings. I'll probably get a chance to meet some of those guys tomorrow. I'll start a Lebo specific thread if I hear anything that sounds like the answer. It wont help you tomorrow . . . but next time.
I stopped by the REI spot on the southside for a few minutes. There must have been 5-6 people and it wasn't even 7:30. I wanted to stick around and talk, but I had to get to work on time (since I'm taking time off to run my GF to the airport and deal with contractors).
Thanks to everyone involved in organizing the breakfasts! Wish these happened more often.
I was doing pretty well in the dapper department until I had to climb FedEx hill. Actually I was surprised to find two bikes already in the rack before I got there, the most ever.
@Stu: did you ever try Hershinger Rd from Montour Rd up to Hookstown, then double back to FedEx? It'd probably add a good 3/4 of a mile or so, but looks like a much more pleasant climb.
The P-G currently has a photo on its homepage with a shot of Katz Plaza this morning. Sweet!
Also... KDKA news has a video-report of it with an interview with bikepgh-Scott!

i slept in! opps!
Let me thank the breakfast organizers as well. Probably the only thing that saved my bacon this morning.
have we kicked bike to work in the rain day?
I noticed a lot more bikes out today. I spoke with one lady at the Oakland/Pitt coffee stop about riding. She said she doesn't usually ride, but did today. She mentioned how easy it was and wondered why more people don't do it.
I got one of my coworkers to ride to work. I don't think she has been on her bike since I moved to PGH. So good deal there. She said she enjoyed it and said she will be biking more often now. The commuter guide they were handing out at the coffee stop was a big hit.
I also roped another person into coming to FOC, who otherwise hasn't biked in PGH that much.
Fantastic first Car Free Friday. Thanks for all your hard work Erok, Scott, Lou, et al.
It's too bad it's not safer, less terrifying to ride your bike to work, people do it and when they're able to do it confidentiality and safely they're amazed how fast and fun it is. I mean if nobody yells at you or "accidentally" almost hits you while taking a phone call.
I didn't notice a huge amount of extra bikes on the road but It did seem drivers gave me a little more courtesey, another great day for bicycling.
I stopped by REI at around 8:30. Hung around and talked with a few people.
It was a great event!
@reddan Hershinger is a wonderful alternative to FedEx hill, absolutely no traffic, nice & easy grade.
For anyone else going this way, it runs off of Montour Run Road one traffic light down from FedEx; same light as going up into K-Mart.
FedEx itself has FOUR bikes in the rack today, including mine, the most I've ever seen there.
