I have a giant 6'x4'x4' "Siesta Sack" that I was considering putting on Craigslist. A friend gave me his futon when he graduated and went back home, so I no longer use the sack as a couch. If someone can provide a pickup or van to move it in, you can have it! I shoved it in my Malibu once, but it's a pain and required two ratchet straps.
BikePGH is moving our office!!!
Hey everyone, i'll have a more formal blog post about this next week, but i wanted to give the messageboard folks a heads up. yinz seem to be the ones to show up to our office the most for volunteering, parties, etc.
anyway, we'll be moving to 3410 Penn Ave in Lawrenceville/Strip. right across from doughboy square in the old Turner Detective Agency Building.
we're real excited about this move, and will be in the new space on February 1.
so anyway, we'll be looking for some stuff, as well as some muscle to help us move, set up, build furniture, etc in the 1upcoming weeks, so keep your ears peeled for a good olde fashioned barn raising!
here's some of the things we'll be looking for:
-a small refridgerator
-microwave
-a hotplate of some sort to heat things up on
-book shelves
-lockers
-whiteboard
-conference table
-and most importantly theLove Sac, lightly used of course
there will be other stuff
I have a truck, so if there are bodies to help load/unload it, I can provide the transportation.
I also have a fairly nice futon with wood frame that I am thinking about getting rid of. Let me know if BP might be interested.
I put a reminder on my calendar to contact you on Feb 1st for transportation. I'll follow up with a PM later in the month.
we'll probably be making the move before the 1st. we have access to the building beforehand, which is nice
I have a Mercury Sable wagon that I can put an amazing amount of stuff into. Just let me know when.
I CANT BELIEVE YOU ARE GOING TO BE IN THE TURNER DETECTIVE AGENCY
can you please replace the sign back to its original? I can provide a photo.
the old sign is actually inside, on the second floor. we probably won't put it back up, but you can still look at it when you come to volunteer.
i wonder how many unions ole turner helped bust?
ps, i'll need you to teach me the "Lawrenceville Wiggle"
ps, i'll need you to teach me the "Lawrenceville Wiggle"
Eh? What might that be? Inquiring minds want to know...
Getting up steep hills by riding up the perpendicular streets so you don't have to do the hill all in one shot?
Caitlin, I did the Lawrenceville wiggle a few months ago for the first time and thought of you! I always end up going straight up one of those damn streets, but it was fun and I got to ride all Paris-Roubaix style on the cobblestones. Oui Oui!
<3 Lawrenceville Wiggle! Avoiding penn and getting a sweet ride through st. mary's cemetery is the best I'll have to make a bikely route for it... or we can include wiggles in the next map.
oh yea sorry: the wiggle is what rsprake said... you go up fisk and over davison so that you dont have to go straight up 40th, ride up penn, or be in traffic.
I'm intrigued by this wiggle concept.
-a hotplate of some sort to heat things up on
they sell a portable butane single burner cheap as hell @rest. depot in the strip. Ton of BTU's for the money
If Lawrenceville had a beach I'd do that Lawrenceville Wiggle every day.
oooo.. this is roller rink jam from my youth. love it!
you should play this at your barn-raising party. you're having a party, right?
i've lived over on the other side of the cemetery in lawrenceville for over two years, and the only wiggle i do is when the street on the hill i'm climbing ends and i have to make a right to continue back up.
but you should definitely keep wiggling as long as it keeps bikers in lawrenceville.
oh, and i totally knew it was going to be lawrenceville before i opened the thread. you know, because everyone is moving here. i was really hoping it was on my side of the neighborhood, though.
Welcome to a small microwave left by a previous tenant. White. It works but the timer is off; I set it for 5 min and it cooked for 2 min. Don't know if it can be fixed or worked around. Let me know if you are interested. Also mght want to post your wants on the pittsburgh freecycle site as well as look at what is being offered.
+1 Pittsburgh Freecycle. I used to be a moderator there. linky
Real good way to get rid of things you no longer need w/o contributing to landfills.
you're welcome to some sweat off my brow...just let me know when help is needed, I'll do my best to pitch in.
yah i dont know any 10th ward wiggles. but much love, tenth ward.
also lawrenceville has the river... so it kinda does have a beach knowwhatimean?
Yes, I would love to remake that music video on the riverside in the winter. How about sometime in February?
Careful, the next thing you know we'll have dudes offering to play the bikini parts, re: the cross race thread.
+1 edmonds59. In February.
@caitlin: Pleeeease bikely the Lawrenceville wiggle, esp. the cemetery part. I'm constantly climbing 40th to Penn & Liberty and wishing I had an alternative.
let me know when you decide you need to hire a janitor to keep the new place in tip top shape. ALSO, I'M REALLY GOOD AT CLEANING (your) WINTER BEATEN BIKES.
Based on what Caitlin wrote, maybe the map would look something like this: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Lville-Wiggle
Or not; I'm not really familiar with this particular maneuver.
I have two fully functional counter top microwaves and a large under cabinet style free for the taking. I also have some tall Ikea bookshelves and maybe more, not fully sure what I I have collected in my garage. How can I get them to the new digs?
yeah that's how i rode it. pretty easy. not even that wiggly. maybe i should look for a wiggle that will take me up stanton.. that would be useful to me these days.
Stanton has a pretty light incline from penn to stanton heights, and a large shoulder.
52nd has the least incline.
57th has the steepest incline.
another "wiggle" = up 46th to davison over to 44th...but there are A LOT of shuttle buses squeezing up 44th these days. There is also a dog on Service way that will chase, and doesn't stay in it's yard.
I also have a truck and can help provide transportation / lift&carry.
thanks everyone. we'll have some details soon
Another resource that you may or may not be aware of;
Greater Distribution Center-- the costco for non-profits and charities. Full-service warehouse in Braddock where you can acquire office furniture, suuplies, etc inexpensively.
Nice, thanks for the suggestion Bikeraunt!
so it looks like we're going to try to make the big move on Saturday January 23
The plan is to have some people at the old space to help load vehicles, and some people at the new space to help unload and stack stuff neatly.
we want to get started around noon.
we'll get some pizza for after. since we're now in the east end, looks like it'll be some spak.
if you can help this day, please RSVP so i know what to expect. email me:
erokore@bike-pgh.org
tell me how you can help and if you have a vehicle available.
if you have something that you want to donate, like a shelf or something, this would also be a good day to drop it off at the new space if you can. BUT PLEASE EMAIL ME if you have something on our wishlist. i don't want to end up with 11 microwaves.
thanks ahead of time!
pm me about discount pizza E
things are looking good for the move. have a few volunteers lined up to help. i could probably use another two people or another vehicle.
pm or email me if you're available. por favor.
Erok, if you can't get anyone, I can probably get away from the car show for a little (I have a vehicle).
I'm a definite maybe. I can help later in the morning, but not early. Large station wagon.
I have a small pickup, and can offer a few hours. Count me in. I'll plan to be in the Terminal Way area just before noon? Sara
@stu: I didn't think things were getting underway until noon.
i think we're looking pretty good with volunteers and whatnot. i don't want tooooo many people showing up either, cause we need stuff for people to do...
@erok: you need me? you didn't reply to my uhhEEEE-maaaleeeuh
oooo sorry.. i'll do dat
Gonnahafta bail. My shoulder is still enough messed up that driving's difficult, let alone trying to carry anything. Sorry...
how'd it go?
big fun. Spak Bros comped the Pizza, Joe (? is Joe on this board?) donated a *huge* beanbag bed thingy, and I think we moved maybe 3 or 4 vanloads of stuff. The new place has a very strange bathroom sink though.
at first i read that as "The new place has a very strange bathroom stink though."
huh. suddenly the weird sink doesn't seem so bad.
Ok, three important points about the move:
1. It is WAY easier to move a non-profits office than it is to move someone's apartment. Way less stuff, way easier to carry. That was nice to learn.
2. The bean bag chair is awesome, and worth a visit to the Bike Pgh offices to check out. Joe (the source of the chair) who is on the message board frequently, really came through on this one.
3. The sink in the bathroom is TRENDY. It is a wide but very shallow basin. Form takes precedence over function on this one. But, it is beautiful.
I didn't realize the request for a bean bag was a joke. Regardless, enjoy.
no, it wasn't a joke. i sincerely wanted one, and put it on the wish list, in a joking way, not thinking that anyone would actually come through with it. y'know, kinda like if i put a "massage chair" on there. it will get use.
I have a small refrigerator you can have, just need to figure out how to get it over there.
Im not sure if you are still looking for a conference, or what condition this one is in, but I thought Id mention it:
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/zip/1569406948.html
and we're in!
check out the blog post as well as some cool pictures and ads from the Junction Coal and Coke company (old tenants) from back in the day.

So I gather you decided on the upstairs. Why?
That part of Lawrenceville seems to be gentrifying really fast. How long do you think before some of those empty lots start sprouting condos?
what empty lots? there aren't that many right there.
do you guys take those REI coupons with you or are they still at 33 terminal way?
Can you please get this doormat? Please?
i like this one more:
Speaking of the intersection of butler and penn - can anyone tell me why traffic coming from downtown has a stop light?
Maybe to allow pedestrians to cross safely between the square and the other side of Penn?
we're downstairs on the ground level.
I took a stack of the REI coupons. there's still some at the old office too.
We're surrounded by empty buildings.
the light on penn is for peds. however, there is a plan to redo the intersection. 34th is apparently getting a light. here's a link to the community meeting on it.
and there are empty lots across the street on the butler side of the statue that the URA owns.
traffic circle!!! I've personally witnessed 1 accident and 3 close calls (one of which involved me on my bike) at this intersection.
The people who are coming out of that side street should get a light. They are the worst!
Ah, the caption of the Turner Detective Agency photo has the caption, "The old Turner Detective Agency sign now resides upstairs in our office space". I inferred that that meant you were upstairs.
I don't like that intersection when I am on my bike at all.
neither do we. i think it will get better. it is amusing constantly seeing people come from/go to penn and butler
so when can i come visit?
drop on by! We're expecting a bunch of drop ins in the beginning.
we'll probably have an open house type thing in early march otherwise
sweet... i might do that monday.
k we'll be sure to lock the door and close the blinds. thanks for the warning
That intersection is ridiculous. All they have to do is install a cross button for peds and keep the east bound Penn light green all the time and there will be MUCH less clusterfucking around there
Pretty cool! I live nearby and have seen the renovation going on in that building, but didn't know who/what was going in!
You need some bike-racks, though.....
