Biking to DC for inauguration day

Hio! I'm planning to fat-bike the GAP to DC to be a part of the inauguration day protests. I'm working on my plans now; I reckon it'll take seven or eight days. I'd rather not go alone. Who'd care to join me!?

Keep in mind, the big savage tunnel will be closed then. Not sure the best detour.

And the c and o is going to really suck even if there is no snow. It sucks pretty badly in the summer so I just imagine that the winter will be worse. And if there is snow, the gap and c and o are generally not maintained for winter conditions.

Myself, if I was going, I would use Amtrak to get there and bike back.

Stu, I don't think Amtrak is compatible with the fat bike the OP is using.

The weather could be a factor, plus won't you miss a lot of work?  What are people protesting, the current democratic process?  Sorry I am out of the loop.

Vannevar, you're right. Maximum tire width is two inches >___<   That's a bummer of a roadblock, but I imagine I can find a friend or family member that will be driving back with a bike rack.  GG, I will miss work, yes. I feel like this is more important than my barista duties. Among other things, I'll be protesting white supremacists. Anyhoo, yeah the weather will probably suck and it's going to be hard. But I think getting there and being there for inauguration day is worthwhile and will be rewarding. I am hoping not to do it alone, so I'd really appreciate people spreading the word to any bike lunatics that you know.

Sounds like a really cool trip.  You get to ride and protest a bunch of extremists.  I don't think they would show their face down there, but one never knows.  Glad Trump is against them as well as he has stated several times.  Not sure why these Nazi types seem to think Trump is on their side?  Maybe it has more to do with a black president ending his term?  Don't know.  Here is what Trump said about them, so you will have the president elects support which is good. "I disavow and condemn them," Trump said Tuesday during a wide-ranging interview with staff members of The New York Times.

Someone posted asking if anyone wanted to ride to DC. Please stop with the politics.

Well, someone jot just posted if someone wanted to ride to DC. Someone specifically asked:
I’m planning to fat-bike the GAP to DC to be a part of the inauguration day protests.
So politics was here from the beginning.

Sorry, this isn't the right forum to try and grasp some of this stuff.  Just wanted to understand the protest aspect of it is all.  Anyone willing to ride to DC on a bike in January is passionate about it and I just wanted to understand it a little better.  I wish the OP well in the journey and hope the weather isn't too bad and it is a safe trip.  That is the most important thing.  Take care all.

thanks for the sentiment, gg. i didn't want to get to into discussing reasons why i want to be there for inauguration day or the specifics of protesting. just hoping to find other bikey people that also want to be there. safety in numbers and winter conditions being crummy, you know. it could be fun!   fun, you guys! campfires n snow angels!

It isn't biking, since then you'll have to find lodging and I'm sure that every hotel for hours around is booked solid, but I'm sure organizations will have low cost bus trips for the day to DC from PGH.

The weather during the trip is one thing, but you may also need to consider the weather prior to the trip. A heavy snowfall a week or two before may make multiple miles impassable. As encouragement, though, I would study how the bike trip across Antarctica was pulled off, and prepare using that knowledge.

Just a heads-up... Capital Bikeshare.  The bike stations that closed for Inauguration Day will open in phases Saturday.  If you plan to use Capital Bikeshare, check its website or the SpotCycle app before your trip to see which stations are available. The system will offer a “corral” to provide extra parking during the Women’s March. The corral will be at 10th Street and Constitution Avenue NW from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit capitalbikeshare.com. More biking. If you want to ride your bike, there are bike racks across the downtown and the mall areas. But remember that bikes are not allowed in the rally area or the march route. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2017/01/18/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-womens-march-on-washington/?utm_term=.b6a16cd20032
