My vote would be the street car tracks and related pavement conditions.
Boggs vs. Warrington?
After looking over the BikePGH map to see if I can find a better way from the South Hills to the South Side, I'm kind of curious as to why Boggs is recommended and Warrington isn't. Having walked both, Boggs is longer and steeper (though admittedly more pleasant). Is it the streetcar tracks? More traffic? Something else I'm missing? Anyone have experience one way or the other?
You nailed it. It's less busy and no tracks.
I'd take anybody over Boggs. He was just an over-hyped singles hitter.
Street car tracks not as much traffic.
Boggs to Williams St then (briefly) on Arlington then Mcardle rd to 10th st
2005 HOF Wade Boggs? Not to mention it’s rumored that he once drunk 60-70 beers during a cross-country flight!
Hollow leg or not, I'd still take Mike Schmidt any day.
See, my only problem going down the McArdle is that a) the roadbed sucks and b) traffic is crazy. I'd rather glide down the 18th St. Extension, which is closer to my destination anyway.
Southern also works as well. It's less steep.
Mcardle is a hundred times better than S 18th. The latter has a lot of rough pavement and several left turns across your path.
It ends up being about ten to fifteen minutes difference for me going Mcardle vs S 18th.
Just to clarify - I believe Greasefoot is suggesting taking Williams for the main descent and then McArdle from the Liberty Bridge down to 10th street.
My bad...Williams St ends about 300 yards above the Liberty Bridge on Arlington. I cross the street at the bottom of Willaims and ride on the sidewalk (to avoid the tracks) and then at the intersection make a right on to McArdle, it will take you behind South Stadium all the way to 10th
