September 12, 2015, 2:00 pm, Starting point, Highland Park Entry Garden, N. Highland Avenue and Reservoir Drive. Ending at Pipers Pub, 1828 E. Carson Street.
For six days this September, Pittsburgh is going to be transformed into “Britsburgh,” a six-day event throughout the city to celebrate the many connections between Greater Pittsburgh and Great Britain. 412 Flock! is honored to be partnering with Britsburgh & helping the festivities by adding some fun on two wheels - and TWEED!
Description: The Tweed Ride will be a casual, social, slow paced bicycle ride of approximately 10+ miles, around 2 hours, with 2 rest stops at points of interest relevant to the Britsburgh theme. The ride will be assisted by members of the non-profit “412 Flock”, a Pittsburgh bicycling advocacy organization (501c designation in process).
The ride will take place on public streets, we will stay together and ride as a group, no one will be “dropped”, and the group will ride observing applicable traffic laws. For individuals who may not be accustomed to riding on public roads, we would hope that would not discourage you, as there will be numerous experienced cyclists riding as part of the group to provide assistance and cues as to safe riding, although the decision to ride is entirely up to the individual.
Clothing fitting the Tweed theme is encouraged but not at all required. Vintage bikes as well are encouraged but not required. Bikes should be in good working condition, and clothing should be chosen so as to not affect safe operation of the bicycle. There will be no support vehicle, although individuals with basic repair equipment and mechanical knowledge will be able to assist with minor mechanical occurrences such as flat tires and the like. The intent is for fun, to ride enjoyably in the company of others. Perspiration is not required. The Pittsburgh Tweed Ride is not affiliated with any other similarly named or themed events.
We realize that this event is on the same day as the Memorial Ride out in Beaver County, although later in the afternoon. Unfortunately, by the time the parties involved found out the potential conflict, the gears for both events were too much in motion to change course due to the various participants. We would hope that if all possible, people would participate in both, but we certainly don't want to draw energy away from that event. Later in the week we will be publicizing the route, if someone cannot make the 2:00 pm start, there will be 2 rest stops for which we will indicate approximate arrival times, so there will be opportunity to join in at those locations.
Event Cost: $5 suggested donation (toward non-profit “412 Flock”)
