Burgh Food ride

I'm going to toss this out for people to think about. I was reading about a ride they do out in Oakland, CA, the tour d taco, ride around to the best rated ( 6 - 8) taco trucks/stands, like a 3-4 hour ride, 30 mi+-, and I became jealous and thought, it should be possible to do such a thing in Pgh with Pgh flavor. These ideas are all so very loose...

I thought, start at Quiet Storm for coffees and baked goods,

Jorsza Corner (Hungarian) in Hazelwood for some sausages or stuffed cabbage would be a point ( I think he serves things of that nature),

There's gotta be some barbecue in there somewhere,

Grilled stickers in the strip,

(there's a lot of meat products there),

The shaved ice guy on Ohio street north side would be a nice terminus.

What else? would such a thing even be possible? Go.

There's a new taco stand on 21st and Penn. I am 95% sure it's the guy who used to run Taco Loco on the South Side.

I'd argue for the carts at CMU. That's some good cheap food and quite local.

yes, that is Taco Loco in front of Reyna's, but he hasn't been the same since his first restaurant on carson. go to chicken latino around the corner.

What about a dessert/ice cream ride? Italian ice on the northside, ice cream at Klavon's in the strip, gellato in Bloomfield, more ice cream at Dave and Andy's in Oakland, cant think of anywhere on the southside that has good ice cream/desserts except Page's at becks run road???

BBQ? Rib guy, uptown, Fifth Ave sidewalk somewhere around Elm. I think he's still there (when we're not under a couple feet of snow).

So far, awesome.

I thought of Page's, that would get a good point out that way.

If we do dessert we may need to do 2 30 mile loops, meat loop, ice cream loop :)

Which is fine.

@Sloaps How so? I thought his move back to Carson (Millvale Tavern) was horrible. I'm bummed he's working a taco stand, that's a long way down from the place on 27th and Jane.

@mayhew that's what i'm saying: shadyside then southside was okay, but then when he moved off carson (jane) his ingredients weren't there. same for when he reopened on carson (tavern) and now as a cart on penn. That, and chicken latino is my surrogate kitchen - i eat there almost everyday.

@edmonds59 meat loop AND ice cream loop? i'm gonna hurl. o_O

@Stu BBQ on herron in the hill is pretty good, too. And it's in proximity to a steep ascent/descent. how well you enjoyed it, will determine the direction you're headed when you leave.

Many moons ago I did a coffee-centric alleycat. That was good fun.

You could do an incredible coffee shop ride in this town. There are a lot of exceptionally good shops and they're all within reasonable riding distance of each other. A lot of the shops are very cyclist friendly too.

Sloaps, I was kind of feeling the hurl myself just thinking about that one. No want hurl.

edmonds59

At least separate the meat loop and the ice cream loop with a coffee loop...

Meat, coffee, desserts...I think we might be able to get a century.

Actually, if we do indoor places, we can focus on bike-friendly joints. For outside places, are there enough carts that aren't in Oakland? Oakland>Strip>Northside isn't much of a ride. Any food trucks outside the City?

Pittsburgh-themed eating and cycling - that would be a great Bike Fest ride. I like the 2 loops of 30 miles idea.

MEAT LOOP!

Somebody could map a Tour de Primanti--a circuit hitting a number of Primanti Brothers locations. Eat a sandwich at each one, or drink an Iron City. I've mapped one out for the eight city Bruegger's stores.

The last leg of the Tour de Primanti ends in Florida

Now you're speakin' my language.

Actually, come to think of it, a couple of Primanti sandwiches is probably enough calories to pedal 'twixt here and there...

Burgh burger ride?

mick
2010-02-25 19:32:03

Seems to me a few months back someone had mapped out a tour of all the Crazy Mocha locations in the city. If nothing else, that would be an exercise in seeing how easy it is to tie up a bike at a bunch of places.

I work at a place that serves pizza. Maybe that can be put into the mix.

willie

A pizza tour could be it's own whole ride.

Tour d'Slice.

I'll be learning to use "Map my ride".

I was actually having a conversation about Pittsburgh Ribs Ride once summer came... this summer I want to eat way more ribs than last summer.

Now that is setting proper goals for yourself!

I've been told by a fairly reliable source that these guys have the best ribs in town http://www.pghbbq.com/. Their hours are limited to a couple days a week April through October and I'm not 100 % sure how you would get there on a bike. And since it's all carry out, you'd either need to pack wet-naps or finish the ride covered in bbq sauce. There are worse things....

jeffinpgh

That's an ugly place to get to on bike, but I've done it. Without looking at a map it was something like: up to Mt Washington, down Warrington, up Crane, down something else incredibly steep, and presto you're on Banksville Rd. Then all the downs are ups and the ups are downs until you get home.

I was trying to find a commute route to Banksville Rd for someone. She took my advice and got a different job instead.

Combo Dirty Dozen/Rib Ride? Bad idea.

edmonds59
2010-02-26 12:14:10

You could roll Mt. Lebanon Caffeine Club style. They head out from the Strip and somehow end up on the 279 ramp that takes you to Banksville Rd. They do it every Sat morning.

That's not a bad idea, although the current West End Circle construction makes it a bit interesting. Main Street in the West End to Wabash, then bear left on Woodsville to get to the Banksville ramp. It only looks suicidal, as if you're about to merge onto the Parkway...it's really not too bad.

reddan
2010-02-26 15:01:28

yeah, that's probably fine on Saturday morning, but I would be nervous about doing it during rush hour on a weekday. Guess I'd have to try it and see though.

lyle
2010-02-26 16:07:46

I am mentally trying to keep this (at least what I'm thinking of as the first in a series) within the realm that newbies on seldom used garage-bikes might see themselves doing (possibly in tweed, but that's another phase).

I guess instead of the "carrot-and-stick" approach, it's the "grilled-meat-on-a-stick" approach. Which seems much better.

edmonds59

@sloaps meat loop AND ice cream loop? i'm gonna hurl. o_O

Sloaps! Don't do that man!

You'll just wreck the last part of the the Meat Loop->Ice Cream Loop ->Beer Loop experience.

Any one for "Pot luck?"

That is, do a doob on the north shore then cruise the casino.

Didn't Maurice T lead a pub ride/crawl a few years ago? _That_ certainly could be resurrected?

bjanaszek
2010-02-26 17:34:28

Uhh, I was kidding. It's near suicidal. It basically involves riding out on the shoulder as far as you can and then waiting at a standstill for a break in traffic that is exiting the highway. I've done it twice, I would never do it again given a choice.

mayhew
2010-02-26 19:01:25

I wasted some of my bosses time looking at the Google-map pics of how to get tto Pgh BBQ from the west end.

Ugly, but do-able. A bunch of shoulder with rumble strip and a hundred yards with not shoulder to get off Banksville Rd and onto Banksville Ave. Ugly, but do-able, particularly with half-a-dozen bikers to take the lane for those 100 yds.

Coming back through the west end?

It's Banksville->Parkway->exit right to curve around -> Rt 51 -> just before the West End Bridge. With on-again-off-again rumble shoulders. Maybe 200 yards where for practical purposes , you are on the interstate.

Two miles + of hellish riding. With a belly full of BBQ.

Crane Avenue sure beats it on the return -either torturous direction of Crane.

Not too long ago, a couple of folks on here explored the railroad lines from West End down 51. It's conceivable to me that there is some kind of off-road way to get close to Pgh BBQ. Maybe going up the Banksville creek bed.

It would be a massive boost to our collective knowledge if we found a off-road route that was OK (evein if not quite legal).

mick
2010-02-26 19:24:57

"Near-suicidal"? So it can be done? :D

edmonds59
2010-02-26 19:45:15

As I said, it gets done every week.
