By the mighty hammer on Thor -is windy out there!
Watch out for the wind out there! Unless you're cycling with the wind, or have supper-strenght, it is pretty thorny out there.
I know I'm a small person and all, but seriously, today took the cake. The wind gusts brought me to complete stops, and twice they pretty much knocked me down. I ended up having to walk the bike a couple of times, or rode on the sidewalk for fear of running into moving cars.
On the same note, a Thank You!! To the pedestrian who saw me go down & helped me up on my bike.
Still, a rather fun ride, those gusts fell like running into invisible walls!

Looking out my window of work, it appears that the wind is blowing in three different directions! However, it seems the bulk of it will make for a nice tailwind for me.

rule #9 reminds me of yesterday evening. I spotted a city bike officer cruising down carson. I think the bike officers are trying to show the motor officers who has more grit, as bikes dont come with heated grips and windshields.

OH MY GOD IT WAS WINDY THIS MORNING.
I thought it was a beautiful day (still packed extra layers), so I headed down liberty. I felt myself moving backwards. On the downhill part. Haha. Ended up busing in.
the ride home wasn't bad at all though, it was actually pretty nice.

For some reason, on every hill I climbed today I had a headwind.
And once on top, it was a side wind.
Then on the way home, the puddles were starting to freeze up.
Sheesh.
(Of course we shouldn't really complain. I spoke to someone in Chicago today and their city is pretty much shut down..)

Not on bike, rather on foot, but I found it amazing that for part of the hike up Sixth Avenue from Liberty to Wm Penn, I had a headwind, then a tailwind the other half. It seemed to change mid-block. Had I been on wheels, that would have made sail deployment rather unpredictable, to say the least.

I experienced the same kind of weirdness on penn near bakery square. I think that must be caused by local disturbances - buildings, hills, etc. At both county airport and PIT the wind was consistently out of the SW all day - it didn't vary more than 30 degrees from 9am to 11pm. Now it's a little more out of the NW.
(BTW, peak gust was 50mph around 10am... and it didn't really go below 20mph with gusts to 30+ all day long. crazy.)

Watch the wind today, too. It's been breezy all night, but they're predicting 40 to 50 mph later today. I would especially watch riding in mixed traffic on north-south roads: Southbound, wind pushing you into traffic. Northbound, wind pushing traffic into you.
Other than that, the thermometer is much higher today than in recent weeks. I just took a bus ride and didn't even bother with a sweater.

i'd take hills over wind any day. at least you know when a hill ends. there's nothing worse than going downhill, and having to pedal hard because the wind is pushing you back. this happened to me on liberty the other day while on my cargo bike. not cool.

wind was more southerly this morning along the river. I didn't get pummeled until i swung round the west end circle and was heading outbound on noblestown.
more of a westerly wind in the pm, and i could keep up with traffic on carson heading down the ramp from the west end circle. insanely fun.

I'm riding to work in about a half hour, and I was bummed out because it went from 47 this morning to around 40 now (and still dropping). Then I realized that even by the time I'm riding back home around 6, it will be warmer than it has been in a while.

I'll admit that I started on my bike this morning, but after a couple of blocks when it was abit too icky-windy for comfort, I waited for the bus and "bused" my bike the rest of the way..... was super-late for work and didn't think prudent to get there even more late with all that "up hill" riding. Felt odd to do it, but I didn't want to be pushed to traffic by the wind like last time.
On the way home I don't have as much rush to get there and can make the wind-battle more enjoyable....
But yeah - be careful out there!

I was passed (safely) by an 18 wheeler earlier today, and then got nailed by a cross wind as the trailer passed me, it must have been blocking the wind. Keep both hands on the bars.

Ack, I know one of the people who runs that place. They're probably devastated. A heck of a hit to a load-bearing wall. TV clip says the floor joists are compromised.

@pseudacris - the floor joists for 2nd and 3rd floors would have been keyed-in to the exterior brick wall. Roof joists as well have nothing beneath them now in that area.
Pure speculation here, but I'm sure city has entire street closed down due to possibility (however remote) entire building could collapse. Wouldn't rule out need for demolition. It is always possible it could be saved, but who know what the cost/benefit to that vs. insurance settlement is.

Just speculating…but it looks like that building has several layers of brick and someone placed a new veneer on the outside to modernize it. If water and ice got down in-between the layers it could have weakened it and pulled away.

I always consider any day in January or February that gets above freezing as a gift of nice weather. How easily we forget all of those days when it was in the low 20's, and then 32 would feel really nice! It was 35 when I got outside this morning- to hang up some laundry since it will dry and not freeze.
