should they include segways too?
California proposes first texting-while-cycling ban
http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2010/04/bike_texting_law.php
"As first reported today in the San Francisco Chronicle, State Sen. Joe Simitian, a Palo Alto Democrat, has proposed extending to cyclists the ban on sending text messages or talking on cell phones while driving. The ban comes as part of legislation beefing up the existing car-related prohibition on using mobile devices, increasing the fines for those offenses to $100."
How about pedestrians, too?
They seriously should just make it illegal to send text messages when you are the one controlling the movement. Driving, cycling, walking, segwaying.
I find it very difficult to do anything other than check the time while on the bike. How do people manage to text and cycle in the first place?
Practice, practice, practice...
At UC Davis, you'd see these sorority girls riding around on their gianormous pink beach cruisers with a purse hooked on to one side of the handlebars, a helmet on the other (how it saves their head while hooked on the handlebars, I don't know), talking into a cell phone in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other, plowing through whatever intersection they wish without a second glance. I've seen plenty of people texting too. In PGH, most people are just focused on not dying, so that leaves little time for other activities.
I've held a conversation on bluetooth before. Doing anything that would take a hand off the bars would be crazy though. You're just asking to go over the handlebars when something goes wrong.
I'm going to paraphrase H.G. Wells here, "Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, and they're texting, my hope for the human race goes away again."
