Car/Bike parking in Highland Park area

I live 30 miles outside Pgh and work in Oakland. Recently I started driving into the city like normal, then parking on a curb, then getting on my bike for the last 4 miles, doing a hybrid car/bike commute. I do this several days a week, weather permitting. I have a lease in an Oakland parking garage, but am considering giving it up if I can find decent parking in Highland Park area that I can lease. One spot on private property or in a small lot would be fine; outdoor is okay, too. If anyone knows of anyone who has something like this to offer, please let me know.

I live on the other side of town so I can't answer specifically, but I bet a church in the area would love to have a donation in exchange for using their lot. It would be a nice win-win, especially since the lot probably sits empty during the hours you would be wanting to use it. I know of a few churches in Carrick/Brentwood that use their lots as private park n rides for the bus - although they don't advertise this, it's a word of mouth thing (gotta keep the riff-raff out).

Can't you just park in the park itself? I don't know of any time limits in there. Why not just park on the street?

Where do you start your commute?

I used to do this and park on Mellon Terrace and bike into Oakland via Negley to centre... Always a place to park on Mellon Terrace. No street cleaning signs and no sticker needed. Only sucks when it was icy because highland park seems to be treated after e lib, shadyside, and Oakland.

You might want to consider parking in the Morningside neighborhood. It's quiet, full of retired police officers, and has easy access to Negley Avenue (take Morningside or Jancey to Stanton, then to Negley.) It also has quick access roads that lead out of the city.

There's also Millvale Riverfront Park, although that means you climb 40th Street.

But there is a bike lane for climbing 40th street now!

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I really appreciate it. I hate my commute and biking the city part of it has been a great change in the daily grind.

I don't mind climbing 40th Street, but if you're not familiar or comfortable with taking a (or the) lane on the 40th Street Bridge, that can be a tad discouraging. I would be willing to meet you in Millvale, if interested. Of course, you could just ride on the bridge sidewalk. I prefer the upstream side, though that does put you on the wrong side of 40th Street traffic.

Stu, the sidewalk is the way to go. Just relax and ride that sidewalk on that bridge. Love it.
