Carson St. Widening
Anyone know what is actually happening with the Carson St. construction? Are they adding another lane? Parking?
Seems like a wasted opportunity to me, they are widening a St. that has to funnel into a two lane road at some point. Why not use that extra space for sidewalk dining, trees and a bike route/ parking.
If they are worried about people not going to the South Side works the issue is the pay for parking garages, not the size of the street getting there.
The turning lanes and extra parking will be nice I suppose but the traffic is still going to back up at the Birmingham bridge as it does now.
Why do they need 2 lanes of traffic in either direction, especially in a commercial pedestrian district? That's just gonna me cars drive like its a highway, ala the Birmingham Bridge. A turning lane makes sense, but is there anyway we could push for bike lanes/paths, or at least shared lane markings?
It's pretty annoying, especially when the city is redoing Market Square in favor of pedestrian traffic.
i don't even think the city had much say in this. carson is a state road, so i believe it's all penndot (but i could be wrong)
it's gonna look like carson from 17th to 23rd, I believe. parking on both sides, two travel lanes and a third lane at intersections for left turns.

That's what kills me! If it is indeed a state road I can see how this could happen.
With every bar, cafe and chain restaurant having sidewalk seating and a bike path that is PACKED on weekends you would think they might try and enhance Carson a bit more for pedestrians and cyclists. But all they care is their cars and creating a few more meters.

i don't know if it will happen on this new stretch of carson, but one nice thing happening lately is sequencing crosswalks to permit pedestrian crossing 2 to 3 seconds *before* permitting parallel traffic to move.
it forces right turning cars to yield to pedestrian traffic because after 2 to 3 seconds pedestrians are already off the curb and in the middle of the adjacent street. it's setup like that in New Brighton and Beaver Falls - good stuff.

When I asked someone at PennDOT (or at the City) about this project some time ago, I was told that the street widening was part of a commitment made to the developers of South Side Works for traffic enhancements in the area.

PennDOT District 11 is advising motorists the north side of the South 28th Street intersection will East Carson Street (Route 837) will reopen to traffic on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, on the South Side in the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County.
After the South 28th Street intersection opens, the north side of South 26th Street will be closed from East Carson Street to Sidney Street. The reopening and closure will occur between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. South 26th Street will remain closed through late July.
The closure is necessary to install storm and sanitary manholes and piping in preparation for grading and resurfacing work that will occur on East Carson Street between South 25th Street and South 28th Street during the week of July 20.
Detour signs will be posted to guide motorists during the closure. Traffic will follow East Carson Street to the next intersection to bypass the closed section of South 26th Street.
Pedestrians and motorists are advised to use extreme caution when traveling on East Carson Street in the construction area.
The $14.3 million project developed in cooperation with the City of Pittsburgh and the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) includes widening and reconstructing about one mile of East Carson Street to accommodate additional lanes beginning just west of South 25th Street to just east of Sara Street. Work also includes intersection improvements, traffic signals, drainage, sidewalk and curb upgrades and other construction. The majority of work will occur on the north side of East Carson Street. The prime contractor for the project is Independent Enterprises, Inc. of Oakdale. The overall project will be completed in fall 2010.

I was pushing a while ago for a shut down of auto traffic on carson, 18th st to 10th st on weekends and busy nights. I talked it over with business owners in the south side and people that lived there. Many thought it a great Idea.
Oh well,,, Consider a Car Free Carson,,, Had a catch phrase and everything....

Well... they spent all that time and money making a ped/bike bridge at Hot Metal and bikes STILL use the auto bridge...
But this is a money thing. It isn't going to help traffic at all. It is to make the Southside Works "seem" nice and try to get more people to come into the area and spend money. Even heading toward the east... once the road gets past the FBI building it id going to bottle neck to one lane again. They seem to have enough trouble moving a sidewalk over a few feet... how would they handle moving train tracks?

The problem with the bike/auto relationship is not the majority of bikers nor the majority of drivers. It is unfortunately just a small percentage of each.

I use Hot Metal ped bridge too, when I'm going towards town from the South Side. If I'm heading towards the Hollow or Hazelwood in any kind of traffic, taking the traffic bridge and right on Second Ave seems way safer than making the left onto Second from the trailhead.
The bike-ped bridge is a convenience. Complaining about bikes not using the ped bridge is like complaining about cars not using the Parkway: "they spent all that time and money on the freeway, and people still drive on Second Avenue..."
The other day I was walking across the hot metal bridge, and some idiot passenger in a pickup truck screamed at me "FAGGOT! AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!"
I guess this was because it was hot and I'd taken off my shirt so I was wearing jeans and a white crew-neck T-shirt. Clearly, I must be one a them homos.
