I saw this yesterday. It is gnarlbuckets.
Im guessing it is filled already
Caution - Ellsworth Avenue outbound
I just got a note from a rider saying that he hit a large deep (waterfilled) pothole on Ellsworth outbound, just before Negley.
The pothole was deep enough to cause damage to his front fork and perhaps wheel, as well as lacerations to cyclist.
Use caution in this area.
I've reported it to 3-1-1-.
That Thing Is Huge.
It happens just before Ivy, west of Negley.
Not filled.
Sara - I think it might have been my friend Dave you heard from.
I rode by on April 13 at around 6:30 pm and it was terrible. (I didn't hit it but just looking at it was bad.)
I 311'd it and as I was turning around, I think I saw a car that hit it get a flat tire from it.
It is huge. Not filled as of 6p 4/13
That whole road around there is shit. There are several potholes
Hope that dude is ok
Ellsworth outbound is awful beginning shortly after Aiken and then nearly all the way to to Shady Ave. That pothole at Ivy (near the elementary school) either reopened from an earlier one that equally sucked, or opened up right next to the patched-up one. The curb-side area of Ellsworth by Bites and Brews and up to Crazy Mocha and all those shops has a few small but deep holes too, so look out.
I wish I had seen this thread before my dentist appointment yesterday on Ellsworth. I almost nailed that pothole. I too 311'd it. That thing could kill a cyclist.
Yeah, I was up that way last night. Looked like an adjacent pothole had been recently filled.
The car behind me hit it, I felt bad for them... I can't even imagine hitting it on a bike (or motorcycle for that matter).
Thanks for the heads up! Without it, I could totally see myself hitting that one!
That pothole at Ivy (near the elementary school) either reopened from an earlier one that equally sucked, or opened up right next to the patched-up one.
I think it partially reopened and what was a somewhat gradual dip became a very sharp "cliff" sort of drop. Part of the patch is holding, which is bad because it is a vertical rise of like 4 inches on a straight line.
This is what Dave posted on Facebook, under the caption "Pothole 1, Bike 0"
That fork is fine. Just flip it around and put the bike on Craigslist.
(Just in case, I'M KIDDING)
Woah. The fork is definitely shot, most likely the frame too.
Wow! That's more than minor damage to the fork. Glad to know that Dave is ok. Hopefully 3-1-1 will get on it quickly. When I submitted it I mentioned damage to the bicycle as well as lacerations to the rider in the hopes that injury causing potholes get filled more quickly than the rest.
Mentioned it to City Public Works this a.m. They understand the urgency. Will try to prioritize this one.
Your choice is to jam on the brakes or swerve into the cars. The loose gravel on the right is no fun.
bunnyhop
No, no. You're screwed.
Woof. I feel like I've seen this very spot go through several incarnations of being an absolutely terrifying moonscape. If they actually fix this I might finally start taking Ellsworth to and from Oakland again.
look at the crumbled asphalt adjacent to it, the more cars go through it and break them apart, that hole can get 125% bigger...
Scott - do you go to Dr. Leahy? How about getting them a bike rack? Glad I had my big lock with me, a mini-U wouldn't work on those poles which are the only thing on the block to lock to IIRC.
Salty, yes I do! The Mayor's bike rack program is about to relaunch. I'll mention it to them. They always allow cyclists to bring their bikes inside though.
Ah, I didn't know I could bring the bike in, that's awesome! I just started going there - they seem cool and it's super convenient for me.
Hole was filled when I went by after noon.
+1 for Dr. Leary too. Good people. I've always taken my bike in with me, but a rack is a nice idea.
I usually take the lane when I get to that part of Ellsworth. Traffic is usually slow enough and there really isn't enough room for a car to safely pass.
+1. i always take the lane through there. the right side beyond, say, filbert, headed toward negley is pretty much impassible by my reckoning.
@Quizbot -thanks for the update. That's good news, especially after seeing the photo that Pseudacris posted.
Dr. Leahy, I mean. Autocorrect tuned in, turned on, & dropped out.
Crazy pic btw. That had to hurt.
I almost always take the parallel street to Ellsworth from Aiken which is nice and quiet.
I'll have to check out that route, Ryan. Sounds relaxing.
Slow and low that is the tempo. It's a little more distance with more stop signs, but when factor in the stop lights and the traffic of Elsworth I think it evens out.
I just had my first checkup in about 2 years with Dr. Leahy. It was very surreal, having a cavity filled with a german shepherd laying next to me, while the dentist answered most of the questions on Jeopardy on TV. And the water fountain in the lobby is pretty interesting.
