Well. You could go through Panther Hollow and through Schenley Park to the corner of Greenfield Ave and Blvd of the Allies. From there, take your pick of local roads to get you to where you want to go in Frick Park.

There is also the new option of taking the Jail Trail to the new segment through Hazellewood to Second Ave. From the end it's about 1 mile to Duck Hollow which will take you into Frick park. Getting to Duck Hollow requires crossing 4 sets of train tracks however.

Another option from Panther Hollow: You can come up behind the Schenley Park Visitors Center, than climb through the park on either Schenley Drive or Circuit Road.

This suggestion falls squarely into the "six of one, half dozen of the other" category for routes through the park. The trail rsprake recommends is very pleasant and comes out at Bartlett playground.

How would you feel about going through the Strip District and taking Penn to Dallas? You should be able to take roads that run approximately parallel to Penn if you are worried about traffic. That would eliminate any interaction with Parkway traffic w/o adding too many complications.

You could even skip the strip and take the N Side trail along River Ave to the 31st Street Bridge, which, despite Google's apparent thinking to the contrary, is still open for now.

Once you get up past 36th, Mintwood and Howley are decent alternatives to Penn/Liberty up to Main (though mintwood's pavement is bad); past Main, I'd take Liberty or Friendship to the far side of Bloomfield, then cut down to Shadyside. You can take Howe or Kentucky & cut behind Ellis School into Mellon Park, then up Beechwood.

Depending on which part of Frick Park you're headed to, you can take the first fork left on Reynolds to the north end, or just stay on Beechwood to the Environmental Center area.

Pulling a trailer, I'd personally pick Liberty over Penn. Penn is a little narrow after Children's hospital and the extra width of a trailer makes it that much more nerve racking.

Then you can take Liberty/Negley to Ellsworth, turn left, run Ellsworth to the end at the Giant Eagle, look for Aurelia Street and work your way to Social way, etc, etc.

Maybe Junction Hollow trail to Neville to Ellsworth, then via the Great Northeast Passage to Beechwood or Reynolds, depending on which part of Frick you want. Not the shortest option, but a gentler climb might help when towing a trailer.

Coming up Boundary/Neville, cross the railroad tracks, and a tiny bit later is a hairpin turn that takes you up into CMU.
