Crush the Commonwealth - Training Rides

There's gonna be a 200K brevet on April 11th (first official brevet of the Pittsburgh Randonneurs, I might add)...should be a good training opportunity for those who think riding stupid-long distances is a good way to spend a weekend.

Details here, summary is Shaler-->Mt Washington-->Carnegie-->the boonies out to East Liverpool-->Beaver-->Rochester-->Zelienople-->Evans City-->Mars-->back to Shaler.

I did the route last fall; it's challenging in spots, but not a killer.

That sounds like fun. I need to take a few rides to build up my taint. I went on a quick ride yesterday and felt the effects of being off my bike all last season.

I am also thinking about doing a camping trip overnighter... Riding out to Ohiopyle, camping one night, and then riding back to Pittsburgh the next morning on a Saturday/Sunday or something similar, just to work out what it will be like with the new panniers I have, and how I want to tie my backpacking tent to the rack, etc.

Not sure when/if I am going to do that but I'll post something when I have a weekend to do it.

So far this season, 30 miles a day is about my limit. Not sure if a better seat would help. But the thought of getting stranded 50+ miles from home doesn't sound like it'd go over well with what would be my rescue crew. Ask me again in about two months. Meanwhile I might be willing to try the Shaler-MtWash-Carnegie part, and then turn tail & head home.

Bump.

200K is this Saturday...you can sign up the morning of, but registration in advance makes it easier for the organizer.

(Registration fee is waived if it's your first Pittsburgh brevet, BTW. "First taste is free...")

I did the route yesterday to make sure all the roads were still there...glorious weather, but temps were ranging from 34 to 65; tough to dress for. By the end of the ride, I had so many layers hanging off the rack I probably looked like a clothesline.
