Cycling Safety Enhancement - a wordy, bothersome treatise.

I would genuinely appreciate all input on this thread. As I rode through the monsoon the other night, up through the Strip, I was checking out those painted bicycles stenciled on the road in various places, and it occurred to me that they should be considerably larger and more ubiquitous, painted of course with that same reflective paint. I would think that life-size plus 20% (scale of the painted bike size) would be a good starting point. Those little tiny ones, especially in the rain, get lost in the rain and dark, and all the other glare and distraction presented to drivers in those conditions. And, is there a better way the city could provide or emplace notices to drivers that they are driving on a designated city/town bike path and what that means? Imagine a road sign made in the exact same design of the old-school yellow diamond with the black bicycle stenciled on it -done in LED lights and possible a programmable scrolling message bar, readable at slow speeds produced by some of those speed humps. Posting those signs at the apex of the humps would also give them a little extra height, if necessary. Has anyone ever put an infomercial on the Pittsburgh public television channel? Maybe a short program focusing on the cycling accidents/fatalities around town? Even a cyclist explaining to an audience why cyclists do what they do and what they're looking for from motorists? Wouldn't they be likely to support a campaign or messaging effort for citizens and visitors, one that enhances Safety and ultimately promotes Tourism? Feel free to shoot this full of holes, that's why I asked. Muchas gracias.

Reflective paint I think is a great idea as are the road signs and speed humps. I REALLY like speed humps because it actually forces people to slow down and it's such a big win for pedestrian safety.

I also like the public TV angle and it's not either/or, but I think the biggest impact comes if you can reach drivers on their radio during their commute. An NPR affiliate is probably the easiest place to start, but you need to branch out to more stations and their demographics after that.

I feel like educating drivers on why cyclists do certain things is crucial. I feel like the majority of disputes are caused by lack of understanding.

We are all (for the most part) drivers, but certainly not all cyclists. Seeing both points of view is crucial.

The Clearchannel stations will have the biggest impact. What will have the best chance at reaching people, like them actually listening (not just hearing it), is some sort of X or DVE sponsored ride.

Hell, I would donate a bike if there was a ride around town sponsored by one of the stations with multiple DJ's participating.

Good call, on the radio part. I agree with the comments about lack of understanding. Pardon my ignorance but what are X/DVE sponsored rides? And what would be your concept for an event with multiple DJs? I'm a blank page on this, as I haven't done it before. Thanks for your input, keep thinking...

I haven't the slightest idea but I know they had a massive water balloon fight for some random cause. There has gotta be something that can be done. Bicycle poker run? Team relay? No idea. In my head I imagine it to be competitive but that is as far as I get.

105.9 the X and 102.5 WDVE. the two most popular rock stations (and therefore most popular overall) in town. Both clear channel. Both typical blah corporate rock (dve "classic" / "modern").

Thank you for the clarification. To anyone that's interested, I sent an email to the public television channel about the possibility of them showcasing this story/issue. I noticed that city paper (the free one found in restaurants) had some sidebar comments from cyclists about the current state of the cycling union, so there is SOME mild interest at least. Does anyone have any good ideas for a format, for the show? Based on a half-hour length, I thought a brief discussion of Pittsburgh's status as a cycling town for a lead-in, followed by a short segment discussing the fatalities and some of the contributing factors, followed by some man-in-the-street interaction with cyclists and motorists, to add perspective. Thoughts?
