FYI: (Relatively) cheap commuter clothing

Just a quick FYI that Whiskey Militia (a deep-discount site for Backcountry.com) is having a pretty decent sale on Levi's Commuter clothing: http://www.whiskeymilitia.com/wm/private_stash/8811 I've bought a pair each of 511 jeans and shorts, and they work pretty well. Check them out!

This is super cheap. The next cheapest I have found the Levi's commuter pants is at Macy's for around $55. The amount of Levi's commuter pants I own is a bit ridiculous but they do get worn out from daily commuting(like by getting caught in the chain as I did for the first time in years). I wouldn't recommend khaki because, even when your conscious about it, you get grease on them and it shows, so darker is better. Definitely going to take advantage of this. Thanks!

I keep a couple of pairs of ratty pants around to commute in, and change when I get to work. That, and velcro reflective straps to keep my pant legs out of my chain. I dislike denim for cycling. Too stiff, and if it gets wet, it makes even a mild rain a dealbreaker as they about double their weight and halve their flexibility. But to each his/her own.

Those Levi's commuter jeans are surprisingly stretchy. Definitely not the same as riding with regular denim. They also have some water repellency and reflective stripes inside the pant legs when you roll them up. I've been pleasantly surprised with them. And for the price on offer, definitely worth a try. However, I will say that the 511 "slim" fit feels pretty skinny to me. I would imagine that the 510 style is akin to riding with denim tights.

I've found Kuhl pants to be good for cycling. Their marketing is all about hiking and mountain climbing, but it means that the fabric deals well with sweat and wet. Depending on the style, they're very loose and it's easy to move in them. Most of them, particularly the heavy fabric ones, can be cuffed up and will stay that way even for longer rides. (I particularly appreciate this, since somehow I've been unable to keep track of my velcro thingies, particularly after the fabric styles moved to black instead of safety yellow.) This is not necessarily an endorsement: I picked up my first pair at REI; it was on clearance (within my normal shopping mode). When they wore out I ordered more online. One drawback: you have to navigate their silly naming scheme (Revolvr, Outkast... oy).

I just checked out the Levi's commuters at Macy's, $49. I might have gotten a pair, being surprised to see them there at all, but boy those suckers don't come anywhere near my size needs. I would have made a joke to the super-baggy hat pencil thin mustache hipster working there, but my '70's irony and his '10's irony might have collided and created a time rift. Golf pants, I'm all about the stretchy golf pants.

A common complaint with the Levi's commuter jeans is that they are too tight. I got a size up from my regular waist and they have been fine. Obviously, machine drying them will result in them shrinking. The trousers aren't nearly as tight but I might still suggest a size up from regular waist. I ordered one of the trucker jackets from this sale and will let people know what I think.

UPDATE: The sale has moved here http://www.whiskeymilitia.com/wm/private_stash/8963 Just filter the brands for Levi's. I decided to give the 504 style a try, which is supposed to be roomier. I'll let you know what I think of them. Also, I have a pair of 511 commuter black trousers that I'm looking to sell because I never use them. I've worn them once to go to the office, but have never ridden in them. Private message me for size and price.

REI had some sale racks full of levi's commuters as well last time I was there. Not sure if they were this cheap, but you could at least try them on (which I recommend, since every style is a different fit)
