I'm building up my touring bike and while I have the frame completely parts-free I was thinking of getting it stripped and repainted. I've done this before myself with so-so results; I don't think it was worth the effort, and I don't have a good clean place to spraypaint anymore. Has anyone gotten an autobody shop or some similar place to do it? I don't think it would really be worth it for more than maybe $40, so if that's an unreal expectation, let me know. It's not vital that I get it repainted but I am into the idea of having a matte clear coat.
I think if you are looking to have it done for under $40 bucks, you will need to find someone who will do it mostly as a favor.
Consider that most body shop's standard labor is between $60-$100/hr, then take material into account, you are over double that $40 at the absolute minimum.
That's what I figured, I guess I was hoping there was some shop that was set up to do this easily, but it seems unlikely. It doesn't seem worth it to pay $100+ to get a frame repainted.
I have had auto body places repaint a frame. $40 is not a reasonable price.

While we are on the topic, perhaps one of you can answer a few questions for me? Can a shop do multiple color powder-coating or does a paint job require a base powder-coat followed by regular paint for additional colors? Would I then want to put decals on the bike followed by a clear-coat applied by myself or would I be better off taking it to a professional for the final coat? What is more expensive, powder coating or having an auto paint shop spray the paint on?

Automotive paint is a three step process (primer, base coat, clear coat) and more labor intensive but you have almost have an infant possibility of paint color options.
Powder-coating is a not as labor intensive and has less steps. It does not require a primer and the clear coat is optional. The color options are kind of limited but its getting better. You can get a frame & fork powder-coated for around $80
Clear coating over decals is tricky. If you put the clear coat on to heavy it can dry and shrink the decal. It has to be done in several very very light coats.
