Jack - not an answer to your question, but there is free camping and three Adirondack shelters (first-come, first-served) at the northern trailhead in Connellsville.

Thanks Vann - will file away for future reference. On this trip I am riding with someone who refuses to consider camping. Makes for a lighter load but also a lighter wallet.

I've always stayed at the motel that is 1.5 harrowing miles south on Rt 119. The ride is particfualrly exiting after dark! The motel is next door to a diner with the quaint, old-fashioned ambience of a "Smoking allowed" restaurant. I'm convinced theree is a way to get from the motel to the GAP east of town without having to travel 119, on the access road to a dam, but I haven't found it. I've seen an announcement for a B&B in Connellesvile. Google yields http://www.connellsvillebedbreakfast.com/

I stayed at the Connellsville B&B one night in 2010 (first night of a bike ride to DC) with my son and a friend, and it was very nice. The owners let us lock our bikes in their shed, the room was fine, the food was good, they even let us borrow their laptop for a few hours to check email.

Thanks folks! Although I've stayed in a few of the fine B&Bs along the trail, this trip must be done "on the cheap". The motel Mick suggested is just what I needed to find. Mick, I'll try to find out if there is a safer route in.

We took the Sheepskin trail from the Yough River trail to Dunbar, and then rode more or less downhill on Rt 119 to the Melody Motor Lodge. There was a wide shoulder to ride on most of the way. Much more pleasant than riding up 119 from the trail in Connellsville.
