Green Surly Crosscheck crushed when a car went onto the sidewalk on Walnut St

Are you the owner, or know the owner? Story goes: "...some idiot driver pulled up onto the curb and crushed the wheel of a green Surly Crosscheck. When confronted, she drove off...." The license plate number is: J73 471J. A good samaritan took a photo and sent it to us. If it's you, I can help connect you to the witness.

Bike owner has been identified. Bike shop she took her bike to told her that witness/photo available. She's very grateful. Hats off to the Pgh bike community for once again looking out for one another. It's nice to know that there is a network out there looking out for one another, thanks....

Hopefully this idiot driver gets nailed for hit and run, along with replacement costs.

Great job, good Samaritan! What shop helped? Credit where credit is due.

Great! Maybe the driver got scared if confronted? So many are just scared of everything these days with the news pounding us all with violence, so I hate to jump on people too hard. Nonetheless, she should have had her checkbook out. Hope the driver pays for the fix, says she is sorry and all is as well as it could be.

I think I saw on twitter that it was an Apple store employee that took the pic.

That's cool, do you know which bike shop told the owner that witnesses were available?

Yes, I saw on FB that it was an Apple Store employee who saw it happen and took the photo. I've asked the bike owner to give a shout out to the bike shop in question (via FB). I'll report back on this thread if I hear back from her.

The bike owner has checked in. Hats off to Top Gear/Trek Bikes in East Liberty for connecting the victim and the witness via social media.

I'm more curious about how will be resolved with the driver. Will Pittsburgh Police be contacted?

So awesome for all involved, except for the hit-and-runner, who in my opinion should be "jumped on" from all sides, no excuses.

So if that car is wearing a dealer plate, it seems like #1 Cochran would want to know that someone in their company is damaging property and leaving the scene with a company car.
2014-01-31 14:20:28
I'm guessing its a loaner car because theirs is in the shop.
2014-01-31 14:27:56
If it's a loaner then they should know who was driving it.

I don't think there is anything to suggest that is a dealer license plate. Whenever a dealership sells a car, they put a frame on the license plate as an advertisement. Most people don't bother to remove that advertisement frame from the back of their car. That's all we are seeing in the picture. If this were an actual dealer plate, it would say "DEALER" in the area which is obscured by the advertisement frame. But otherwise, awesome work getting this person identified! I hope justice is served swiftly.

I think it is the format of the license plate that indicates it is a dealer plate... Letter ###-### Letter is not a standard PA plate format. Mine is letter letter letter - #### and I think that it typical for anything other than a vanity plate or special use vehicle. I think the license plate holder reference just points in a certain direction relative to WHICH dealer it might be. Where is Cochran Cadillac, anyway?

Hard to tell...
DEFINITION OF PERSONALIZED REGISTRATION PLATE A personalized registration plate may contain a combination of up to seven letters and numbers. One hyphen or one space is permitted, but not both. Special characters are not available. A personalized motorcycle registration plate may contain up to five letters and numbers in combination. NOTE: A hyphen or space is not recognized as part of the plate configuration and does not count as one of the letters or numbers.
J73-471J fits definition.

Sure, there is a 0.0000001% chance someone thought it would cute to get a vanity plate formatted like a dealer plate. Maybe less - the state might not even issue it to avoid confusion. Either way, easy enough for the cops to sort out. Whether or not they'll care, I dunno. Whether they can bring charges without positive ID (which the witnesses may or may not be able to provide) of the driver, probably not.

Interesting about the format. Thanks for the education. I hope we hear back from the cross check owner with the outcome of the police report...
