i once ran into a guy who was riding on 51. i asked him how that was working out. he said it was less busy than the road he'd been on before. WTF.
Guy biking on Route 51
To the guy biking on Route 51 today between Wabash and West Liberty Ave around 1545L. You have "Balls of Steel" I hope you made it safely.
The guy I saw today looked like he didn't have a care in the world. He was steady even though cars were whizzing by him at 55 mph +.
Everything that is wrong with pgh.
"saw mill run" speed limit = 35
In theory its the same road as say, Route 8, which
has share the road signs and people ride often, at
least for a bit. Or as Washington road (or is it
25?)
Or the other end of 51 on the other side of west
end circle where it is cool to ride.
Or freaking freeport road that is 55mph literally
100 feet away from a highway.
I second "freaking freeport road" for high speed passes...Honestly, I've been passed by folks that had to be going 80 on that 4-lane section before the Hulton Bridge!
it does bug me that freeport has such a high speed limit so close to the highway. what's the point of having a highway?
on the other hand, i've never been terribly uncomfortable biking on it. i just take the lane and cars give a wide berth, presumably because i pretty much only ever encounter one car at a time.
Unless enforced on an hourly basis or something, speed limits mean nothing. It's all about road design. I mistakenly rode on Freeport once not realizing it turned into a full fledged highway. Never again.
I bike on 51 btwn S Side and Neville Isl often. Should I be scared?
I don't mind Freeport Rd either, come to think of it.
No.
I'll take Freeport Road over Allegheny River Blvd any day.
I've been called a million names on Allegheny River Blvd. Only a few people have yelled at me on Freeport Rd.
And honestly, other than a few high-speed scary passes, I have not had a problem on 51 before. Coming back into the city where the road is narrow along the retaining wall right before Station Square is a little scary, I suppose.
51 is horrible, esp northbound S of the Liberty Tubes. There is one guardrail that actually leans into the driving lane a couple inches, somewhere between Whited and Glenbury, the last time I was along there.
If Critical Mass wanted to do something really ballsy, we'd try tackling one of these stupid roads. Not sure of the logistics, it just seems to be the next thing to do.
I've ridden route 51 from the south side to neville island one time, and that time it was no problem at all. i only saw a few cars the whole time, it was pretty much deserted.
Rt 51 along the river is tolerable. Rt 51 in the South Hills is hell. Very different road situation.
