Heading West - U.S. 40

Any suggestions on a route that will either directly connect me to U.S. 40 or will eventually get me onto U.S. 40? I ultimately need to get to Barnesville, Ohio. Any better suggestions are welcome.

US Bike Route 50 through Ohio will track about 30 miles north of Route 40 for most of its distance. Ohio link is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?ll=40.019201,-82.705078&t=m&source=embed&ie=UTF8&msa=0&spn=4.038304,7.03125&z=7&mid=zz6SpdRK3w3I.ki-aPHgcFJT4 The PA Section of USBR 50 is still under development, but if your bike is not too heavily loaded, you can take a Port Authority bus to Carnegie Station, ride about 3 miles south (in less than great conditions, but do able) and pick up the Panhandle Trail. That will get you close to the eastern end of USBR 50 in Ohio.

Thanks Sara - he left this morning. He is taking the Montour Trail to Route 50 and then to Ohio.

BTW, for future reference, I don't see how you cross the Ohio if you're following Route 50 out of Pittsburgh. It leads you down to a really hilly area midway between Steubenville and Wheeling. I don't see another way to get across that's better than the Market St bridge in Steubenville, which is where Sarah's route would lead. When I rode that way I used US 22 (the Market St bridge wasn't open) to cross the river. It was a 9 on my personal 10-point scale of road terror. Also I had to climb over a wire fence and scramble down a highway embankment to get to it from the Panhandle Trail. (BTW I might have totally misinterpreted the post -- maybe Route 50 means Ohio Bike Route 50, not PA Route 50. But anyway, it looks like Market St is the best way across the Ohio for at least twenty miles either way.)

@Vannevar We're all headed that way. Actually, I'm with jonawebb and PA 50 to 844 to WV 88 to Wheeling would be the better way to get to US 40 and across the Ohio River. However, I wouldn't ride US 40 much further than to cross the river if going to Barnesville. Although meandering and probably with some hills, OH 30 to OH 147 looks like a much nicer ride.
