helmet mount for video cam - question
I received a gift of a helmet camcorder - cool, but the mounting device that came with it doesn't seem useful. The mount has an adhesive disc that's supposed to stick on the side or top of the helmet. The problem is that there isn't a flat surface on my helmet, making the contact area of the adhesive small - too small to feel safe about it staying in place.
I've looked around, but can't find anything that I can do to provide a flat surface or make up for the rounded surface of my helmet. Is there a product available or some other way to mount the camcorder that you might know of?
This mount which came with my camera had enough flex that it could stick well enough on the side of my helmet and has had no problems. http://contour.com/products/rotating-flat-surface-mount
Perhaps this would work as well. http://contour.com/products/flex-strap--2
My first thought is to make a round disk of plastic the same size as the mount, drill 2 holes in it like a big button, lace a long zip tie thru it, and zip tie it thru the nearest air vent on the helmet, then stick the camera mount on that. I'd probably put a piece of double sided foam tape between the helmet and disk also, just for stability.
Also, if I was running a camera, I'd also consider a light backup cord from the camera to the helmet, just in case the mount fails. But I'm kind of a belt and suspenders then another pair of suspenders kind of guy.
All good ideas, thanks.
@chemicaldave - mine is a contour too, but the disc is very rigid, no flex.
@robjdlc and edmonds59 - I'm thinking some combination of your suggestions is my next move. Yes, there's a back-up cord for safety too.
Expensive, but purpose-built.
The big button idea isn't too bad, though I was thinking of a velcro mount as well, before mpm posted.
I've got a laser cutter if you wanted to make a nice black circle with button holes in it out of acrylic.
Tdw: I have an older model contour like the one you have and stef has the new one like chemical dave's. I'll see if the new mounts work with the old camera tonight and let you know.
For my contour I'm using the vented helmet mount. No adhesive on the helmet, no zip ties, just straps down. A bit dorky, but flexible.
The issue is that tdw has the previous model of contour. You guys all have the new one. They changed the mounts between generations. I'm pretty sure they are compatible but I'm going to double check tonight.
Wow - great help from all. Thanks, cburch, for all the extra checking.
