Help Create a Bike Safety Map for Pittsburgh

Hi all! I'm the Founder of a company here in Pittsburgh called LaneSpotter - and we just went live with the version first version of the website and app! LaneSpotter is a community-based, mapping and navigation tool that helps cyclists find the safest bike routes in their city. Cyclists use the app to plan safe bike routes, with help from other cyclists. Members have access to Bike Safety Maps that the community creates by rating the roads they travel (Very Safe, Safe, Average, Use Caution, Avoid). In addition to Safety Maps, cyclists can view Bike Maps that highlight their city’s bike lanes, a safe route creation tool and turn-by-turn navigation. If you're interested in testing - and helping build the safety map - please visit www.lanespotter.bike/pittsburgh and sign up. Here's a video overview: https://vimeo.com/201683936 Safe riding!

While I appreciate the work being done, I do hope that the data will be made available to Bike Pittsburgh and others to help improve the longstanding Pittsburgh bike map ....

Of course. The people at Bike PGH are friends. The data collected will be provided to them at no cost to help drive efforts in any way possible. In addition to the data, LaneSpotter will be donating a portion of any future revenue to its partner bike advocacy groups. LaneSpotter is being rolled out nationally. And while Pittsburgh is EXTREMELY lucky to have an active and engaged advocacy group here - one that produces a great map - other cities aren't as lucky. I'm launching this here in beta because I live here. It will be made available in Cleveland and Denver next. And then ten additional cities shortly after. Hopefully you'll be able to use it when you travel someday.

One of my dreams about the Pittsburgh bike map (and possibly lanespotter). Would be to have it extend all the way to the edges of Allegheny county (or at least the area bounded by the montour trail at the south / west and bounded by the turnpike and 79 to the north.) I remember there was an active Allegheny project that put out bicycle suitability maps, wondering if any of that data could be merged in to the map to increase the 'reach' of recommended routes further from the core city.

Yes! That's exactly what I want to see too! In the next week, we'll be expanding the coverage area for the Safety Map so that cyclists across Allegheny County and beyond can start to use the platform. My dream is to be able to open the website or app and see bike safety ratings from coast to coast.
