high end road bikes with flat tires during pedal pittsburgh

I could be wrong but it seemed like all the flats that happened during pedal pittsburgh were from high end road bikes, while the commuter and cheap bikes kept going flat free.

I don't know about cheap tires, but higher end race tires are lighter weight and more puncture prone.

I'd bet on pinch flats from potholes. Smaller tires have less volume, you have to ride them at incredibly high pressure to keep the rim and the road apart when they hit a sharp edge.

High end skinny racing tires are prone to punctures on glass filled roads.

Higher volume tires less so, true commuter tires with flat proof beads even less. Mountain bike tires too.

They all had pumps and patch kits / tubes though. I asked every person I pedaled past if they needed any help... didn't have any takers. Like you noticed, every single one I saw was changing a flat on a high-end road bike.

I was riding with a Guy on the south side who got a huge piece of glass in his front tire. He had a pretty decent bike. I would have been screwed if I got a flat. Didn't have anything on me to fix it. Really smart. I did do a lot of bunny hopping going inbound on east St.

You would have been standing there for an hour until I rode past and asked if you needed any help.

I'm guessing that a lot of the higher end bike flats were on guys who normally ride further out from the city. The suburban roads have glass and potholes for sure, but not as much as the city streets. And most of those guys were moving at a faster speed so they were hitting more holes.

Has anyone tried the Thick Slick tires. I just googled them and was wondering if they are any good, or any good in the rain.

I took the advice of a few threads back in the fall and put schwalb marathons on my bike, (knock on wood) no issues yet. This winter gonna keep the dream alive by swapping out to their studded version (biggest regret about last winter).

I stopped to help someone going up I believe Josephine st. They had nothing at all. I always carry 2 tubes and a patch kit for rides like these but don't think I've used one on myself on an organized ride yet and I've given my only tube to people in the past.

And if you're riding with other people close by, it's harder to dodge the glass and potholes.

Molly - who I haven't seen in ages and I don't think posts on the board rides Thick Slicks and seems to be pretty happy with them.

You can check them out at Thick - they keep them in stock.
