why not take it to the cemetery and really enjoy a good climb?
hill loops
a log of hill loops used for training purposes...
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3922511
length: 2.5 miles
clockwise: mile climb, not too steep, no necessary stops on climb, two on descent
counterclockwise: steep mile climb, no necessary stops on climb, one on descent
traffic: relatively low, generous shoulders
I live off of Brinton Rd. I really dislike it. It's the last hill before I get home and I'm usually pretty tired. Have you ever tried to ride up columbia ave from the bottom? I can't do on my road bike yet but it's not too bad on the mt bike.
i rode up columbia last summer, but i think i started by going up westmoreland, which may or may not be cheating. i loved how many times i was sure i was at the top.
the point is that its something thats challenging but not too challenging so you could do loops for training. brinton, lloyd, and columbia are all awesome for false summits
stanton ave works well for this. start at either end, doesn't matter. use butler and one wild place to connect.
I did Lloyd Ave yesterday at the of my ride. I also like Lougay Rd (sp) off of Allegheny river blvd all the way to the top of Frankstown rd.
The Alp D Huez cemetery out of braddock is amazing
+1 on the L'Alpe D'Huez cemetery.
Hunter/Plum Road out of Oakmont/Verona is probably the closest "classic" climb to the city. It's also easy to do repeats, as the descent is as fun as the climb.
One I've toyed with, only because it's not that far from home, is the Dirty Dozen entry of Suffolk-Hazleton-Burgess, then looping back via Perrysville, Charles/Essen, Sunset, Gershon, Royal, East, and repeat. I suppose you could do it in reverse if you're not looking for as difficult a climb.
Even simpler, just go over to North Ave and climb Federal and return, over and over. Or alternate by using Perrysville to the top.
@stu: Hill repeats on S-H-B will leave a bit of a mark, methinks.
I concur with Dan. And we used to do lunchtime rides on the South Side DD hills.
Spring Garden is a nice climb in that area, though probably not the most ideal for repeats, given that the angle is fairly gentle for the first 3/4 of the hill.
If you were feeling particularly masochistic, you could do repeats on the last bit of Buena Vista...
Other good North Side-ish hills:
Gass Ave under 279 up towards Highland Ave is good for repeats: you can loop Gass-Union-New Brighton Rd up through Ben Avon and back down to Gass.
Also in that area, Josephs Lane up to Avonworth High School is decent.
i've done negley repeats in the past. it can hurt a good bit, but it's nice and short, so the mental suffering is mostly minimal.
i wish there was a street like greenfield without so much traffic. that's a really nice climb.
Try some of the secondary streets in Greenfield. Much less traffic than Greenfield Ave, and hills are just as much fun! The views at the top are something special too.
I like using a combo of Woods Run Road and Riverview Avenue to ride up and down and to and from the park.
