How to Get A Bike To Florida

Hey gang, A friend of mine is flying down to Florida and wants his bike down there too. What's the best way to do it? He's also thrifty, so is considering cost too

Depends on the airline, so I would check that first and then FedEx. I have done both depending. It isn't all that cheap. Another option is to rent a bike for the time he/she will be in FL. Sometimes that is cheaper and the selection is many times pretty good believe it or not.

At PBPB I learned some airlines allow you to take a bike as checked baggage so long as it's under a weight limit. Policies vary, and I don't know if that's just for certain international carriers. But I'd check.

Any particular spot in Fla? I have some contacts in the Ft Lauderdale area who likely could hook you up with a decent bike.

Where can you get a bike box, besides the Amtrak station?

I have a bike box I want to get ride of. It is in perfect shape and free. I can drop it off somewhere even.

BTW bike shops have extra bike boxes all the time.

Heard good things about bike-flights. https://www.bikeflights.com/ Regardless of how you do it, it's not going to be cheap.

I just used Bikeflights to get my bike to florida (and san diego). worked beautifully. $40 each way:) It is ground, so make sure that thing is boxed well. I got a hard case on craigslist. On a budget, you'll also want to be able to box/unbox it yourself. but there are lots of videos on youtube. I now use them all the time. great service. (you drop/pick up the bike from fedex/kinkos or a hotel OR just pay $5 extra for a house pick up/drop off.)

Consider buying a beater bike from Craigs list down there and selling (at probably a largely reduced price) before you leave.
