Ice Cream Social for NNO - all are welcome! (And some updates from GPPNA)

I'm hosting my annual ice cream social from 5-8pm tomorrow (Tuesday August 5) as part of the city-wide National Night Out events. Free ice cream sundaes for all! 100 block of South Braddock, 2 doors up from the Walgreens. But seriously, we at Greater Park Place Neighborhood Association have been plugging away to push the agenda of road safety on Penn and Braddock for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. We'll try anything. I have stood on Braddock Avenue in a banana costume and waved to motorists to slow down. We coordinate 311 bombs to get fresh paint down whenever it's wearing off too much in the crosswalks. We started our Pledge to Drive 25 campaign to remind people to follow the laws not only for speeding, but also not parking too close to intersections and crosswalks to keep everyone safe. And we worked with our neighbors at Regent Square Civic Association to get a comprehensive traffic study from the Southwestern PA Commission, which is now complete and sitting in the hands of officials in the four cities/boroughs that come together at Regent Square, including Pittsburgh. So....Braddock and Penn are still fairly terrifying right now, but I have some hope that our efforts will pay off someday soon. And that's reason enough to share some ice cream.

Thanks for the head's up! Too bad I'm out of town tomorrow. :( No kidding that Braddock and Penn are terrifying (thankfully there are alternatives). I just witnessed a near miss on Saturday during the rain.

I'm really happy somebody is working on making it better. Thanks for your efforts.

I would love to attend, but I have another commitment. For living well north of town, I do care a lot about road safety in that area, and bicycled Penn through here at least once since June 1. Anyone caring to experience the Penn/Braddock traffic hellhole need only view a few minutes of my video of the James Price memorial from July 2013, when I stood on the edge of the street and pointed the camera at traffic, any time there was a pause in the activities. I am also the person to talk to if you want to improve citizen representation on Port Authority's advisory board, the Allegheny County Transit Council. It's hard to run anyone over if you're sitting on a bus, so how do we get 10,000 more people to be on a bus instead of driving? (Yes, lots of problems to tackle there. Talk to me.)
