Ice Patch on McCardle
There has been water running onto the road for some time and now that its cold its turning to ice. Its on the downward side about halfway down the hill before the liberty tubes and continues for a hundred yards or so.
Be careful!
That's been a deadly stretch for a long time. It also faces north so unless air temp is above freezing the ice stays.
I haven't had to think about this yet, but with the snow this weekend, I guess I'm forced to..
My evening commute currently involves heading down Sycamore. With the change of weather, I'd been planning on using the sidewalk on McArdle to make me nightly escape... but sounds like that might not be the best option either.
Any advice on a safe way up&down Mt Washington? I'm heading in/back to Edgewood.
The ice won't effect the sidewalk. You'll be fine on that regard.
Sycamore is usually pretty OK, the city seems to keep it well salted, but I did hit black ice a few times on the way down.
Thanks for the advice.
@Eric, thanks. Going down Sycamore scares me in the summer on dry roads... I do it every day I bike into work, but I don't think I go more than 8mph the whole way. So black ice would be a big deal for me, psychologically if not in reality.
A couple of times I've gone down Boggs to Warrington and then down Arlington. Not sure if I'd want to do that in the dark or in the winter.
Wonderful quote from the PG article Sloapes referenced:
"It's not really a road in certain portions."
It's an OK way down the hill - ride as though you are not expecting a road there.
