This is a great idea. I'm not sure how scientific it will be, but I would be very interested in the results of this.

Interesting Baltimore Study - Passing Distance
I just saw this post on baltimore velo. It looks like baltimore is doing a study to see the impact of passing distance on streets with and without bike infrastructure using commuters with cameras.
