I think a message (such as those illustrated above) would be more effective than just promoting the organization. IMHO.

@Almklm, that's the idea. The plates would say something like '4 feet please', and would be sold through Bike Pittsburgh.

The folks at the Ohio River Trail Council (which will extend from Coraopolis to Monaca, then Rochester-Beaver and west around to Midland) have just gotten this plate approved and are mailing application forms to their members: On the one hand, there's the "sleeping with the enemy" thing, but on the other hand what a great way to extend to message into another audience. Major, major downside for the plateholder who acts like a jerk to bicyclists though. (probably never happen).

I like this one from Florida. Of course most of Florida is a very tough place for cyclists. Also, I prefer the idea of a plate that is more about sharing the road and not specific to Pittsburgh only, but whatever it is, it is better than no bike plate.

I think vanity plates are just confusing. Plates should not be able to be customized at all and in standard look/feel for each state, there should also be no numbers which are hard to differentiate, such as 1 and I or 5 and S. Make it super easy to identify the plate number, isn't the the whole purpose? No special dealer plates, cop plates, veteran plates, save the environment plates, cancer awareness plates.

Why not just make some bumper stickers instead?

@Benzo, specialty license plates could raise money for Bike Pittsburgh and, I think, are a more prominent way to spread the message that bikes have a right to be here than bumper stickers. They would also increase the visibility of Bike Pittsburgh in the community. Here's an example, based on Van's:

That gets my vote. Simple and to the point! Great!

I'm just opposed to specialty plates, or anything that makes licence plates harder to read than the standard plate from a distance. Too much variation in plates makes it hard to ID the actual plate number and associated state. I'm really not opposed to a bike-pgh plate if we're going to have specialty plates, but I don't think specialty plates should exist at all.

Aww, but then people couldn't get those black "War On Drugs" plates or whatever those black ones are. (*Sarcasm*)

I always assumed anyone sporting a war on drugs plate was doing so ironically. I think they all end in 420.

I like the railroad-y ones conceptually, but as a functioning license plate they are the worst.

The Flagship Niagara plates are arguably the worst specialty plate design. Parked, standing 10 feet behind one, I found it difficult to make out the letters. White-on-white, what were they thinking? On a larger scale, the font used on PA plates does make it difficult to discern various letters: W-M-N, C-G-O-0, S-5, a couple others. Other states's plates are so much easier to read. As to a specialty plate, I would not buy one, since I am rarely in the car, and my wife would be the one who would have to deal with any anti-bike people, which are ridiculously easy to find in a suburban church parking lot. So, no.

I would buy this, especially if it had a 4' rule statement on it. Pittsburgh Ultimate ("frisbee") did this several years back but I was waiting for the numbers to get up to the number I wanted (they started with 1) and then I decided I didn't like them enough any more.... But I also would buy a bumper or window sticker right now! We really need to help educate people about the 4' rule. I've thought about hanging a sign on my back when commuting, but that's just too dorky.

I need opinions: Would this be too dorky? It's a reflective/safety vest that came with a plastic 'incident command' slot where one could slide a "CSI" or "SWAT TEAM", etc...placard.

I've been wanting to make something from that sign template, but with 'Please' struck out and 'It's not a request, it's the law' written under... but maybe that's just me.

I saw one yesterday from (I think) Ohio that was a mix of 8s and Bs, clearly designed to be confusing... I was surprised the DMV let them get away with it.

Saw this today. Turns out, the owner is Peggy, one of the founders of the original incarnation of Golden Triangle Bikes.

I like the idea. I'd get one, but I'd rather have a Bike Pittsburgh logo than the "4 feet" logo.

How are these going to be offered? there seems to be 6-7 plates offered by the state along with the plain plate. i.e., you get these 6-7 plates directly from the DMV by paying more. Then, there are the non-profit group affinity plates. There seems to be 100s of those, but you order directly from the group and the DMV sends you the plate. I assume this Share the Road plate will be the former, not the latter.

Those were the best, black plates look great on black cars. Now they all look like garbage, and low and behold...everyone stopped buying DARE plates. Does this coincide with the increase in heroin epidemic? Someone bring back them back.

I'll post a photo of mine too.  Mine's the Bike Safety plate, but is just a number plate (00019), not a customized one that says something.   I like that the funds collected will go to bike safety projects.

Bought a new to me car and spend the extra money to get my "share the road" plate.  I am number 147.
