local news stories and LTE 2020

"The city’s 2020 capital budget allocates $17.7 million to make streets safe for all users, nearly triple the available funds of previous years. Contained within the “Complete Streets,” program, listed projects include installing pedestrian signals, traffic calming, bike infrastructure, and general streetscape improvements. Over the next two years, Pittsburgh officials will partner with local nonprofits Bike Pittsburgh and Healthy Ride, who will be supported by Colorado-based nonprofit advocacy group People For Bikes, to design and build 60 miles of new and updated bike infrastructure." The eastern end of Forward Ave (near Walnut Towers) will be closed for four months starting next week. When this road is closed to cars, it becomes an excellent bicycle hill-climbing training road! https://pittsburghpa.gov/press-releases/press-releases/3592

I have a feeling they may be waiting for the smallman street construction to complete before the road diet here, otherwise folks may try to detour through that site with a lot of active construction happening. Thinking this could still happen this spring/summer.

And they’re still going 50. I caught myself doing 35 between Amtrak and the light at 16th St. It’s what the road looks like it should be driven as. Even at that, I had drivers passing me on the right at 40+ as I lined up for the left onto 16th.

The Kenmawr Bridge, which carries Braddock Avenue across Norfolk Southern railroad tracks in Rankin, will be under construction for the next two years. Traffic will be diverted onto a temporary bridge for much of the time. The old bridge is being replaced because the old one was falling apart ("the existing bridge has a 12-ton weight limit that prohibits trucks and buses from using it and the sidewalks have been closed since 2013") and Norfolk Southern wants to run double-stacked trains on this line in the future. There is no plan to put a bike lane on the new bridge! But they're widening the car lanes. https://www.post-gazette.com/news/transportation/2020/03/01/Kenmawr-Bridge-replacement-Swissvale-Rankin-Allegheny-County-Kennywood-Park/stories/202002290009

The last time I cycled to work all year long through winter was during the polar vortex in 2014, about 16 miles round trip. I have a coworker in his late 40's who does 35 miles round trip every day. You can do it. I think it's a good mental and physical exercise to get comfortable with discomfort.

I pass through there half a dozen times a week.  There's confusion about who goes first and such.   There shouldn't be, but there is. Lots of double thinking "Oh. No cars, I'll go through. WAIT! There's that pedestrian."  "I'll go. I'll wait for that guy. He's waiting for me."

Post Gazette Thursday, 6/11 quote from Dr. John Williams of UPMC regarding opening up to green phase- “The approach is always to find the reasonable risk. If all cars were banned, car crashes wouldn’t exist, but neither would civilization.” Glad to know that Benz unveiled civilization in 1885.

Did David Lohr, the man who killed Aleksander Teimouri, ever go to trial for his actions?  The most recent information I can find, when a charge of criminal homicide was dropped, is from January 0f 2019.
