Not on a bike, but sums me up pretty well:
Ok, that didn't work. Advice on editing to post that photo?
it looks like after the last forward slash, you forgot .jpg">
check the link again, it might not actually need the forward slash. i have found that this message board will throw it in at random, or maybe it's me...
that flickr link is to a private page, too...
Ok, that didn't work. Advice on editing to post that photo?
Make sure in Flickr that you click the "all sizes" (I think that's what it is called) tab at the top and grab the url from there. It'll probably end in .jpg
The http: part needs to be in quotation marks ""
(everything after the src= including the .jpg)
And you need to close the IMG tag with a >
oh, and you also need the quote before http.
well... once you hit "all sizes" you still need to choose the size photo you want and right click (PC) or CONTROL + click (MAC) to "view image" in order to get the correct URL...
First, you need the url to the source of the image (should end in ".jpg", ."jpeg", ".gif" or something like that).
Second, put the URL in quotation marks.
Thanks! Getting 4 people involved to help me post such a ridiculous pic is making me laugh pretty hard right now
I will definitely recognize you if I ever see you on the road.
Rachel is quite right you have to choose the size. You can click on small, medium, large. at the top.
Then underneath the photo you'll see
2. Grab the photo's URL:
Just copy the text in that box for your url.

@Lyle, no self hate here, just a dry sense of humor, and sure I could probably kick your ass on or off a bike, but if you don't think triathletes are dorky then you've never seen anyone running a 10k with their bike helmet still on.
Triathletes are dorky. And this is me saying this.
My name is Jason and I live in Bellevue. I started bike commuting last year and love it !! I also ride recreationally on the weekends & evenings and recently started getting back into mountain biking with a single-speed 29er.
I own four bikes -- the Surly, a Cannondale racing bike, a Schwinn Heavy-Duti and a Redline 29er.
Here is a picture of me on my way home on the Friday evening before "snowmagedden."
Triathletes are dorky. And this is me saying this.
Pot? Meet kettle.
^ When Dan and I ride together it's like a small brigade of the dork army.
^ It is refreshing, however, as the catcalling yokels generally are so spoilt for choice as to what taunts to deploy that they end up slackjawed, saying nothing at all...

Guess I should put down the ice cream...
Must say.... I'm very glad people have been posting pics and sharing about themselves.... I like the diversity and uniqueness of everyone
@Steevo: Ohh... thanks for that info on the Somali community! I think I like Lawerenceville even MORE now!
the somali kids love bikes too... its awesome... they cruise around on the most busted bikes you can imagine, i give them new parts, and in no time something else it broken... i guess they ride hard
The Somali families are also about the best neighbors ever. I don't know them very well at all, but every interaction I've had with the kids or adults has been totally respectful and positive. They're some of the nicest kids down at Arsenal Park when we're playing polo, and totally hilarious any time I've struck up conversation with them. Yesterday one of them was asking me about my flip flop hub on my bike actually.
YES and YES!!! I've seen the kids flock around on their bikes too! That's awesome!! Although.... their bikes are a lot nicer than mine, haha!
Very happy to find all of this out about L-Ville and the Somali Refugees. I lived in Polish Hill before, which while I loved it, it was very quiet with no much neighbor interaction, except for when I saw people going down to Gooskies, The Rock Room, and even the Warsaw Tavern (old days).
Coolness! I'm gonna pay more attention now when I see the kids on their bikes!!
Jeff/ Sara / anyone else who liked super mash bros, check out ludachrist: http://worshipludachrist.blogspot.com/

The unfortunate side effect of paving Baker is the sport bike goons can zip up the road again bouncing off the rev limiter.
The unfortunate side effect of paving Baker is the sport bike goons can zip up the road again bouncing off the rev limiter.
This is one of the downsides of M'side. This sound is much like seeing a robin--a sign of spring.
Eric, you probably live like two doors down from me. Do you have BikePGH stickers on your vehicles?
I never thought that Baker was that bad, but yeah, those guys seem to be revving their engines more annoyingly than ever. Haven't thought of a constructive way of telling them to stop being dicks yet though.
Man, if those guys refrained from revving their engines and people didn't have never ending barking dogs, M'side would be golden
PS I'm in the house that had the desk sitting out in front of it for several months, and now there is a refrigerator. We're classy like that
don't worry. our grass gets cut once a week maybe and then it's a million feet long. when we're home and it's light out we're either riding or it's raining. i can't wait until school is out. i feel like parents and kids stare at our house cause of the long grass.
our back yard is a mud pit. if you ever ride down swan alley between hampton and bryant, and see a brindle boxer/pit trying to jump a 6 foot privacy fence in the back and the neighbor's 4 foot chainlink fence on the other side, that is my house. my dog wants to give your face a million kisses.
i do love living in morningside. over on our side it's pretty quiet.
Yep, a maroon mini van and tan sedan with a roof rack.
There will be no complaints from me about random not-normally-outside objects left outside for an inordinate amount of time, nor the barking of dogs, I'm probably more guilty than the lot of yinz.
I also own a motorcycle, but the stock exhaust is in place, and I rarely rev its single cylinder past idle in the neighborhood.
Morningside is a great neighborhood, if we can get some improved cycling routes at the exits (Baker and Stanton), it will be just about perfect.
Yeah, I think I've seen it. It is kind of a dirt bike? I don't think I've ever heard it. Only the ear piercing ones from across the street. But yeah, it isn't half bad. Nobody has peed in my front door or anything yet
Hey, don't lump all us (ex) sportbike goons together. Kidding, just being mocksensitive.
Most of the dorks you hear screaming the engines don't have any more idea of how to actually ride than than they do to knit a sock.

Sorry for both Morningside and motorcycle derailments here.
Pierce-I'd call it a dual sport, I don't think 400 pound motorcycles can really be dirt bikes. Glad you only seen not heard it.
My neighbors on both sides both commute by bike too!
Welcome Bruce! I didn't know who Major Taylor was until last week after seeing a few guys from your club at the Silent Ride and looked it up. At first I thought it was a military thing (damn wars!) Pritty amazing story.
I remember you Bruce and part of your 'peeps' at the ride of silence! Very cool

I guess the time has come. Lived in the east end from 92-2001. Now live in oakmont. Working in the east end now in the cycling industry. Have ridden bikes in pgh since 1991, but have managed to stay out of the bike community. Crossed the USA solo in 2000, NC to PGH in 98, PGH to DC in 99, PGH to NJ and Back in 96.
Its nice to see firsthand the cohesion of the local riding organizations and the positive results had in the city so far.

jason, what month was that taken?
That was taken on May 20 of this year. It's Glacier National Park, only about 60 miles east of where I live ... and about 4,000 feet higher. This is a 30-mile climb. Couldn't make it to the top because of an avalanche.

alankhg,
I "live" in Whitefish (I have a Whitefish address, but live about 15 miles out of town toward Olney ... and I'm living in Pittsburgh for the next month or two before I head back). I race for Great Northern Cycles out of Whitefish.
Haha -- no, you will not see any snow at that elevation, just over 3,000 feet, this time of year. Not to mention it was one of the most mild winters on record. Which way are you headed out of Whitefish? If you've got any questions about riding out there or things to do in town, let me know!
Jason, I'm headed west via the Northern Tier route which goes up to Eureka then down toward Libby and beyond.
A few things I'm curious about that you may or may not know about:
-how likely do you think the Empire Builder is to be on time going west?
-are bears an issue on the campgrounds to the west? If so, are campgrounds equipped with boxes for food or should I be prepared to do the tree-rope thing?
-any advice on cheap lodging in town if Couchsurfing falls through?

-I've never ridden the Empire Builder, but I bet it'll be pretty close to on time. That's the only commuter train that goes through there and with it being the 100-year anniversary of GNP, I have a feeling they're really trying to keep things on the up-and-up.
-I'd definitely bring a length of rope, about 20-30 feet, to hang bear bags until you get out of Montana.
- There is no hostel or cheap backpacker's inn in Whitefish, unfortunately. There is a campground on the lake. I would suggest trying to CouchSurf. It shouldn't be too hard; during the winter I got lots of requests, but people always found houses closer to the mountain than mine.
You're in for an awesome ride! Be aware: 93 between Whitefish and Eureka is not super bike friendly. Be prepared for little to no shoulder and lots of trucks. That 60-mile stretch sort of sucks. Once you hit Eureka and head south to Libby around Lake Kookanusa and the Libby Dam, the ride gets amazing! Enjoy!

Hi, I am moving to Pgh from Colorado. I am looging for a 3 months rental too. I used to be the guy who thought bicycles were pointless. If it didn't have a motor what is the point? Then I moved to the city... and Dang! having a bicycle was like regaining some independence. I have pretty much been commuting every day (sun, rain, or snow) on a bike to work every since!
In my opinion, riding my bike to work is really the best part of the work day!

I would soooo love a pedal boat!
Holy cow Marko, my feelings exactly! That is not your typical rent-a pedal boat.
Dan, are you the Dan listed as a dealer for those things? Any chance of getting a demo on one sometime? These should be all over the three rivers.
Marko & Edmonds,
I totally LOVE my pedal boat - the joy of boating without that petrol aftertaste - and i gotta say, it's a pleasure to 'ride' with no cars (or roads for that matter).
I am the Dan listed on the website. I'm not exactly a dealer, but I did get a few of these on the local rivers, and I can get more. We've put on a bunch of miles this summer on the local rivers and lakes. I'll take you (or anyone else) out for a pedal anytime. Send me a note.
Is there such a thing as a bike/bike boat, (land to water to land) duck boat style?
(think Deep Purple here)
FLOCK on the water....
88MS88: Ask Nick about his bike/bike boat plans sometime.
I'm going to assume there are lights and a stereo (stocked bar, mini tv as well?).

hi hyla.
Hyla - +1 for Ali Farka Toure, how did you come by a Malian musician? I saw Habibe Koite in concert in Segou, but never Salif Keita... or are you just a guitar fan? (I lived in Mali for two years, so I've got a soft spot for the kora)
Koras are awesome. There's at least one player in the NYC subway system now. Toumani Diabaté you probably also know of?
[...here's a nice video for the uninitiated: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DEKQjj6Ga0].
I usually find stuff I like via exchanges w/ music-head friends. I have not seen any of the famous Malians in concert (lucky you!). I also used to do some community radio looooong ago, and a steady stream of African music from all over the continent would come through the vinyl bins there. (post- Paul Simon I suppose)
Hey Hyla! I was just thinking about you today! Yay Park Place bikes!

Hi Dan! I'm another Dan, who lives across the valley from ya in Brighton Heights. You'll usually see me on a green Bianchi commuter(with the awesome faux-leopard print saddle) or a dark green P-38 recumbent.
Danielson, nice to meet you. My name is Sara, and I ride through Bellevue often, usually on a Blue Nishiki Road Bike while wearing a matching metallic blue helmet. Be sure to wave, or say hi if you see me. I live just down the road, in Emsworth.
Hello danielson, I'm no stranger to Bellevue, either. It's on my way between McCandless & Moon, which I do a few times a month (via West View, the closed bridge on Linc/Calif, & the McKees Rocks Bridge). I'm usually on an old Ross or a Raleigh Record, often wearing an orange safety vest. Pic of me about halfway down Page 1 of this thread. Wave if you see me!
Thanks for the welcomes everyone. Hope to see you all on the road sometime.

Here's how to get a pic in here. First, make sure it's on Flickr or someplace where you can get a real URL for the pic, starting with "http" and ending in ".jpg"
Then paste that in here, as follows, only use angle brackets in place of the square brackets:

Well, welcome speedy. Faster would be a road bike, or at least a hybrid. But I also think a lot of faster comes from the rider. Be careful speeding on the trails though- with walkers, kids, and dogs speeding along can be dangerous for all involved.
Glad to see people are still saying 'hello' in here!
Over the weekend I saw a bunch of people on the river trails. I think I saw you East Ender, and someone else shouted 'Hi Bikeygirl" around the trail by the NorthSide Casino area, but didn't know who it was.
Nice to see people taking advantage of the nice warm weekends we've been having
That was me bikeygirl. Ride on!
Cool! So... remember me asking questions about doing a 'century' ride a couple of months ago? Well.... I'm 'training' for it and doing recognizant-long rides on the weekends to test me & my bike out. My goal is to get this accomplished before the end of the year. We'll see, but so far, excited!!!
Good for you bikeygirl for keeping at it. How far have you got in one day?
I've been doing 30-35miles around town -all flat non-stop, going up & down all three rivers as far as it seems possible in just one continuous lap. Will start doubling laps next & get comfy with it.... century won't be in town, though.
Don't ask more, I'll surely update once I hit it!
Pseudacris and ejwme, I just caught up on this thread and saw the Ali Farka Toure and Toumani Diabate references.
Did you know Vieux Farka Toure (Ali's son, also amazing) played in Pittsburgh several months ago? It was an amaaazing show, and it was sad that only like 20 or 30 people were there.
Argh, no. Missed that one. Where did he play?
The Rex theater in the South Side. Probably the best guitarmanship I've ever seen in person, and I was like 5 feet in front of him.
He was also very jolly and friendly, which I've heard is (was?) also true of his father.
Hi all, I've lurked for quite a while and it's about time I start participating. I'm real life friends with salty and I'm sure he'll be happy to see I've finally signed up.

thehistorian:
neil, your right knee looks like you probably have a bit of arthritis. assuming you do, does cycling help with the pain? i work in orthopaedics, and i'm sorry, i can't help noticing people's hips and knees and posture/gait associated with arthritis.
Stefb, both knees are knocked, the left since birth, the right from both birth and repeated falls. I also have mild scoliosis that looks worse after a long ride - like the 35 miles into Philadelphia the day of the photo.
Cycling doesn't help with the pain, but it is a less painful exercise. I prefer hiking, but that's work compared to pedaling.
Let's just say that Ibuprofen is my friend.
bad deal. i know a good doctor in pittsburgh if you ever need one.
When I'm in Pittsburgh, and have a job with health coverage (crossing my fingers), I may take you up on that offer. I have coverage out here, but I've been discouraged from using it by doctors and PTs who think I should live in a cage. Sorry, I didn't lose weight to sit in a chair.
we encourage exercise for anyone with arthritis. i always find it amazingly awesome when people with knees like yours get out on a bike. great job.
I have some mechanical help. I have extenders on the crank arms. Also I take care to avoid the Manayunk Wall. I suppose I'll have to pass on riding up Canton Avenue when I'm in Pittsburgh. Darn.
I can't believe I haven't done this yet... I went through just to check, but pretty sure I haven't. Well ok then.

Welcome to the board, Sara! You will find that tongue is seriously in cheek on many occasions on this board. (We don't bite, really.)
Thanks Stu:) I've become very familiar with Rule #9 this winter. I'll have to look more into #12. That part about s-1 might be getting very close.
add multiple biking disciplines to the mix and the minimum can explode. for example i currently have:
downhill bike
freeride bike
24" dirt jumper/urban bike
hardtail cross country trail (not race) bike
single speed road bike (summer only)
geared road bike
spare road bike (shared)
and this year i am buying at least two of the following:
cross bike or touring bike
cargo bike or nice trailer (easily costs as much as a cheap cargo bike) for the above
26" dirt jump/urban
full suspension xc bike or 29er (GASP!!)
and i'm sure i will still find things that none of them are quite perfect for and want more.
stef currently has:
single speed road bike
cross country hardtail
geared road bike
spare road bike (shared)
and will most likely be buying a cross bike or touring bike
and may be buying in the next year or so:
full suspension xc bike
freeride bike
bikes are the best addiction ever.

Storytime: As of about a month ago, I didn't know how how to ride a bike at all. I started a new job in February and the PAT route I relied on was promptly canceled. I started walking from Polish Hill to Millvale daily. I quickly got sick of the noisy traffic on the 40SB. With some help from my girlfriend (and much from the interwebs) I gradually taught myself how to ride. I commuted to work for the first time yesterday. It was awesome.
^ that is a great story! What's your favorite route for crossing the river? I feel pretty good that I can make it up Brereton to Dobson without falling over.
Yeah, schmenjamin, that is a wonderful story, very happy. Ride safely. Keep that girlfriend. Hope to see you out there.
Sweeet! Welcome to the board!
Ben, welcome! I'm always happy to read about another adult beginner.
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. I hope to make it out to one of the group rides one of these days.
@pseuda: I usually roll down to the 31SB and transfer to the Millvale trail via River Ave. As you'd imagine the climb home is still a little rough. When I can climb Brereton without tumbling into Gooski's I'll know I've made it.

Cool. Is that Mt. St. Helens?
Yeah. It's more or less the beginning of a trail that winds its way through a valley and eventually to the mountain itself. Unfortunately bikes are a no no which sucks because it takes over four hours to walk it one direction and you can't camp in the park itself. There are other paths on the other side, through Gifford Pinchot National Forest, but I never got around to exploring them as Mt. St. Helens was three hours from Seattle. Welcome to the forums @humblesage. Is your BMX customized for commuting?
Thanks for the welcome.
As for customization:
I kinda made some weird build choices with my current bike. And BMX building is really a series of compromises once you start to rely on one for transportation. I come from a race background, but race frames on the street can be a risk without spending mad cash. So my commuter is a full-on CrMo frame/forks/bars job with really tough street/park trick components. It's heavy, and with tires full of air rides like a rolling brick. You have to be committed I guess. This setup has lasted me four years though with only tires, brake pads and brake cables needing replaced.
It takes a certain kind of person to build and ride a BMX some 10-20 miles/day, but I enjoy it. It's what you make it. At the age of 29 it's time for BMX bikes to start to play secondary role, and while I'll keep one (at least) in my quiver at all times, I'm kinda excited to move into the fixed gear world this fall. (It's nice to know there are companies making faster track style bikes that can stand up to a nut job like me finally.)
Welcome West Suburbs! need more people from out that way. Awesome about the bmx, badass bikes. This is the kind of place where no one is going to have any expectations about what kind of bike you ride, just ride. Sounds like you have the right idea. Although if you do need any advice as to what might be a good next bike, you're going to get more than you bargain for. See you out on the road sometime.
Right on!
Sometime between pre-purchase anxiety and buyer's remorse, I may ask for final words of advice. Till then, I'm trying not to think about new toys till I can actually afford them. haha...
here's a couple of "bmx" fixes you might enjoy:
http://www.ns-bikes.com/2011/bikes/analog.html
http://www.sebikes.com/pkfixedgear.php
thanks, cburch, thanks.
Maybe someone could teach me to do a manual on a single speed someday, I would enjoy that.
@church: I saw that SE at Thick. In fact, until I saw that bike I was digging on single-speed DJ bikes. That Analog looks so clean though, I'll have to look into that one for sure. Thanks!!
yeah i think chris might even have one or two of the raw/blue pk rippers left. i liked that color scheme better than the current one.
I've pretty much decided to find something used and wait for the 2012s to start hitting the shops. Or maybe even build up one which is usually how I handle the whole bike thing. So I'll be on the lookout for used fixies over the next couple weeks.

This is my bike - had it since 1998. A '98 Gary Fisher Zebrano. I love it and it's served me well on road and off, in the city and in the country, for over a dozen years now. The gearshift's been replaced, but everything else is original. Man, I love this bike!
Welcome to the message board, and to the 'Burgh! There's lots of folks from Morningside on here if you need help with routs etc.

This post is waaay overdue since I've met many of you, and heard of a lot of you from mr. marvelous. I don't get out riding as much as I would like, but I do enjoy the Flock rides and taking off on my bike for a date day with mr. m. Planning on working out on the trainer this winter and building up some strength. I've heard that spin classes are good for cold weather also. I am just an okay rider, I have the muscle to get up some good size hills, but sometimes the descents kind of terrify me...something about barreling down a hill with nothing but a helmet to protect me on a road filled with pot holes, debris, and the occasional speeding car going around a blind turn... I enjoy keeping myself in once piece
My bike is a Trek FX 7.2. For the riding I do, I think it serves me well. I made a few upgrades but not too much of an investment since I would like to eventually get a bike that is more fun.
Nice to have you on the board, mrs marvelous!
Welcome mrs. marvelous! Cool name btw, glad to have another good looking spandex wearing biker on the board. Don't be afraid of descents I'm sure there is some handsome spandex wearing guy that will help you with your bike skills.
Mr M, thanks for the compliment

@Dave it's worth a try! Won't cost you more than a cog and lockring. I also recommend something to keep your feet attached to the pedals.
@troyer
Already one step ahead of you. The bike came with a flip-flop hub, cog, and lock ring. I got some toe clips, but quickly abandoned those as I need some practice getting my foot into them without falling over.
@Chemicaldave: I have an Earl as well. (Black though, and I'm not really riding it now cause I upgraded to a faster ride.) It rides fixed nice. To me, toe clips are a must. And you do need some practice with them. Totally worth it once you get the hang of it. Then again, you posted this 3 weeks ago, so you probably have a method by this point.
Yes. I went fixed, tried the toe clips, couldn't get my other foot in with it fixed. I switched back to singlespeed so I can coast down fast hills easier.
Right on. I'm thinking of converting mine to an internally geared hub next summer. For now, it's just sitting around lonely.
Always good to see another Orange Bike on the boards!

Welcome Tim. Saw the Doughboy and Larryville splashed all over the biz times this week!
Hmm, interesting, if you're that guy, maybe you're the guy to put the word out about how badly somebody needs to develop a hostel in this 'burgh.
Welcome!
Thanks, guys.....thanks again to you Erok for helping me get my stolen bike back back 09 or 10 or whenever it was....I seem to recall you had a sighting of my stolen bike, didn't you? Yeah, I have no idea how those stories about Lawrenceville came together like that for this week's paper...I feel a little weird about it. I'm not sure whatever happened to the mission to establish a new hostel in Pgh. I know there were some fundraisers for it in 09 but then it seemed to go quiet. Obviously not the best time to pursue something like that.

It's nice to see another South Hill-er!
haha yeah...I've only seen 4 others this side of Mt. Washington lol
4 others from the board, or total 4 people on bicycles?
Just 4 others while commuting towards/from town, but I've seen others riding for presumably other reasons. Of course since our direction of travel is the same, that's a limitation. Once I get down Sycamore I see cyclists everywhere and it's great to see!
I usually travel in via Becks Run & know of two others that use this too - so we might be up to seven!

Welcome to the message board, Mike!
Those New Hampshire woods look great! Do you happen to have much experience with riding roads in the Peterboro area? I am looking for some route advice since I'll be visiting that area soon.
I don't have any experience in that part of the state (never lived there, just visit). I had a road bike in NH in the summer of 2004 and did some riding on the Kancamagus Highway (nice but strenuous) and east of Woodstock (also nice, with very few motorists). There is also a crit on a Nascar track in the middle of the state that I did twice - fun and pretty safe. Last summer was mountain biking only around North Conway - really nicely sculpted trails.

Welcome!
To post photos, you'll want to get the URL for the image itself (i.e., just the image, not a page with the image on it), which will usually end in .jpg. In most browsers you would be able to get that by going to the Facebook link you posted above, right-clicking on the photo itself, and selecting "Copy Image URL."
So it theoretically should work if it looks like this but with the [] brackets replaced with <> brackets: [img src="http://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/6294_526728949461_6992064_n.jpg"]

That’s the only place I’ve seen that pie.Born in Altoona, raised in suburbs of Pittsburgh, and I lived in Reading, PA for 2 years with the company I work for now remotely here in Pittsburgh. I didn't cycle when I lived out there, but there is plenty of beautiful rural farm roads with plenty of good road cycling out in Eastern PA such as Berks and Lancaster County.
