New trees on the Jail Trail

I just saw an article saying Tree Pittsburgh will be planting a bunch of new trees next to the jail trail on Tuesday, 6 April. I tried getting in touch with them to suggest they put conifers on the north side for better year round traffic noise abatement and deciduous on the south side to allow sunlight through for ice and snow melting in the winter. I suspect they did not consult with anyone from the cycling community or thought of this on their own.

I'm sure there were cyclists  involved in the decisions. Although your take on the situation makes sense, I don't imagine the idea of evergreens to the north and deciduous trees to the south has been discussed. You could get involved with Tree Pgh.   I imagine it would take committed service as a volunteer to get your ideas implemented.

I rode the jail trail today, saw one section that has conifers on both sides, which means to me at some point in the future it may not get any direct sunlight. Nice for 2 seconds in the summer, but may not be ice free for extended periods in the winter. This made me realize that other other than being quicker, this is another reason I started using 5th and Forbes to ride between home and downtown.
