yeah, you know, despite that horrible week, bike fatalities are fairly rare in Pittsburgh, fortunately.

In my memory, and this is within the city limits only:

2004: on Second Ave, Hazelwood (adult)

2009: Sennot St, Oakland (adult)

2010: Bausman, Knoxville (6-year old)

2012: 2 adults, Penn Ave Point Breeze

while Pittsburgh isn't in the report (we're not one of the largest 50 cities, which is a crock of shit if you ask me), here's a comparison:

In Fresno, nearly 10% of ALL traffic fatalities are cyclists, yet are only 0.7% of commuters. if Pittsburgh was in this report, we'd put .3 bicycle fatalities per year (as this was a 3-year average from 2007-9)

but your original post is appalling and disgusting for that city

Essential Public Radio (WESA, formerly WDUQ) did a piece this evening on Ghost Bikes in NYC. At the time of the interview, a bunch of folks had gotten together and were prepping and painting EIGHT ghost bikes. Presumably to have them at the ready when needed, but still....anticipating the need for 8 seemed so sad.

And Erok, I hope your numbers are right - only being able to remember four IN THE CITY in the past decade is a good thing. It is still 4 too many, of course. But I am grateful the number is not higher.

i'm fairly certain i am right. i don't think there were any between 2001 and 2004.

there were some just outside city limits, tho.

A friend in CA sent me this info. It's 3 yrs old and you may have already seen it, but some doctor injured 2 cyclists deliberately.
