Oakland Ghost Bike
Friday, August 3, 2012 marks the 3 year anniversary of the hit and run killing of Rui Hui Lin by Oakland landlord, Timothy Kish, in Oakland at the intersection of Meyran and Louisa. I will be replacing the ghost bike that sat at the site* at 8:30pm.
Candles and flowers are appreciated.
*The ghost bike that sat at the site was removed months due to extensive damage.

If you can, please come out tonight. I know this death isn't on people minds as much as the most recent ones, but it is the time of the year where there is a lot of new people in the Oakland and I think this will be a good reminder to people in the area to pay attention when driving.

Nick, sorry I cannot make it tonight but thanks for doing this - again. I cannot express the profound effect that attending the first ghost bike lockup for Rui Hui Lin had on me. I still think about the event and the man I unfortunately never knew often.

I'm one hour, I will be locking up this sign along with a ghost bike at the corner of Meyran and Louisa in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. If you are ever in the area, stop by, take a look at it, and think about what it would be like to lose someone you loved just because someone rolled through a stop sign.

There wasn't many people, but it was almost nicer that way because it kept it light.
For those of you who missed it:
The family had already been by and put food and water out at the site.
Hopefully this one will make it more than a few weeks without being vandalized. The bike is all welded together with no moving parts and pulled tight to the pole. It is hard to get it to move without using intentional force.
I also was almost hit by a guy driving a Subaru Impreza Wagon making a left to go through the park on the Blvd from Dawson. when he stopped a few feet from my knees, I shook my head at him. He didn't seem to like that and told me "Don't shake your f*cking head at me". It was a really crumby experience to have while carrying a 30lb bike a mile to memorialize a man killed by a negligent driver.

There are two things that really keep this in my memory:
When it happened, I got several phone calls from people who thought it might have been me. The initial report was a young Asian man was hit while riding a bike in Oakland--I guess to a lot of people, I was the first person to come to mind.
Secondly, when I replaced it for the 6th or 7th time last year on the anniversary, his aunt was at the site. She was crying trying to thank us for having it there so she called someone on the phone who spoke better English to have them thank us. All of the emotion from that moment is permanently ingrained in my mind.
Much like James Price, Don Parker, and Dr Albert Varacallo, to see what few hours of my time and little of my money can mean to the family keeps me compelled to keep doing this.

Thanks for your hard work Nick. I vividly remember Mr Lin's aunt from last year too. I hope that none of our families have to experience what they did.
