OT-Friendship bars,eateries,places of interest?

I just got an apartment in Friendship, on S. Winebiddle St. Moving down from Mt. Washington..And i am quite excited to be off of that hill. What are some good places to eat? Grab a beer? Or anything else i definitely need to check out or experience?

Thai Gourmet on liberty in bloomfield (not Thai Cuisine*) is pretty fantastic, and not too far from friendship. I don't know much about bars in general, but the ones on liberty always seem to be pretty crowded on weekend nights when I go by. Also, it sounds like you're not too far from Spak. After the first time I went there, I wondered why it was only the first time I'd gone.

If you know mind me asking, what is the rent like over there? I'm looking in the bloomfield/friendshp/lawrenceville area for a new apartment for me and my roommate.

*Thai cuisine is bigger, nicer looking, but not as good, in my opinion.

You're just down the road from:

J'eet (crepes)

Los Cabos (best socal mexican in pgh)

Fazio's (jersey pizza)

Grazianos (six packs, pizza)

Can't beat the burgers at Tessaros on Liberty if you are a meat eater.

Rubberfactory: I'd eaten pizza everywhere in pgh and couldn't find anything I liked. The pizza was too greasy, overcooked, bad ingredients, the wrong cheese, just wrong combinations all over the place. Then Fazios moved in a block from my apt and I love it. After talking to the guy a little, I found out up until a few years ago he made pizza 5 miles away from my house in new jersey. Totally awesome.

+1 on Thai Gourmet being by far the better of the two. Chris you are also pretty close to the ellsworth/highland/center area. Tons of great food over there too. A bit snootier than bloomfield though.

@ rubberfactory -- I know what you're talking about. More years ago than I care to count, I lived in Bloomfield on Matilda Street across from West Penn Hospital when I was in law school. I thought it was one of the greatest places to live in the Burgh. Its own convenient little main street with all the stores you might need in easy walking distance, good bus transportation to downtown, Oakland and the East End, and good places to eat -- those days Del's was the Italian place to eat. I hadn't discovered biking yet at the time, but if had I would have been on my bike to go everywhere becuase it's such a great location to bike to and from places. As you have discovered, when you picked Bloomfield to live in you done good.

cdavey - despite my shitty apartment that I need to get out of asap, if I hadn't moved to bloomfield, I wouldn't have made the decision to stay in pittsburgh long-term.

Welcome to the neighborhood, been here for 8 years myself. Lots to check out in the area as people have covered.

Avoid Friendship Park and Friendship Ave in general at night in nice weather. For whatever reason that area is sketch central.

huh. i worked in bloomfield for six years, and i always greatly preferred thai cuisine to thai gourmet. in fact, thai cuisine makes my favorite meal in the city (their green curry). then again, maybe it's because i find it impossible to try anything on the menu that's not a curry. the curry is just too good to pass up, and that's from someone who likes trying new things for the sake of it.

friendship is a great place. there's tons to do. you've got all the places previously mentioned (and sharp edge, again). silky's has a shuffleboard table, and a reasonable selection, and is never too crowded (which i like). each place in bloomfield has its own vibe, and you should check out each one for its own merits. you're also pretty close to shadyside and east liberty. kelly's isn't exactly far away, and there are way too many amazing restaurants over by highland and penn circle.

oh, and people's indian on penn in garfield. i haven't been there in a while, but when i worked at west penn, we went for lunch at least weekly.

I like green beans in my green curry, and I also like the tofu in my curry to be fried. simple preference things typically lead to me liking one place over another.

I've heard from someone whose roommate worked at Thai cuisine that they put fish sauce in some of their "vegetarian" dishes. not cool.

+1 on Thai Gourmet. It actually used to be better, though. I guess they figured that the market didn't really appreciate the fresh herbs and limes and started cutting back on the expensive ingredients. :(

their lunch special is super cheap, though, and it's still super tasty.

i can never remember if i like thai cuisine or thai gourmet. i'll go to one and think "ok, this is the good one" and then have the same thing happen at the other... so i have to call it a tie.

also - go to paul's cds, great record/cd shop.

the way I remember is the tofu - Thai gormet (by shur-save) fries the tofu in their curry, Thai cuisine does not. That was seriously the dealbreaker for me, haha.

Does Spak Bros. count? I only tried it because of this board, but one of the better hoagies in town, IMHO.
