Panhandle / Potato Garden questions

Hey all,

New to this site and new to riding as well. My first six rides were done on the Montour Trail. Today, we decided to do Panhandle after seeing the connector sign on Montour. We went all the way to mile 0, where the sign said it was mile 11.1 of the old railroad. So, we decided to bike up the rail line a little just to see what was there.

We went maybe a quarter mile and ran into the old track and a bunch of railroad cars. (Where we were promptly confronted by some guy who said we rode down his driveway on private property to get there, and were not welcome.) My question is does anyone know who owns the track and cars that we saw? Why are they just sitting there?

My other question is that I saw Potato Garden referenced on another post. What is that? Can someone provide more details? I saw someone mention Hopewell which is where I live.

Thanks!

Potato Garden is a road. Also known as 3071.

It's a great road, an Oscar Swan 3 star ride.

Oh, ok. I don't ride on roads, thanks.

I'm probably going to ride Swann's *** Potato Garden Run this sunday. Start around 10. Go slow. Stop for a meal (maybe 2). Be back about dusk.

Mick, when you come down off the ridge to the intersection with 151, there's a little convenience store and deli/restaurant called the Buckboard Station just a quarter-mile to the left...they've always been very accommodating to passing cyclists.

Enjoy the ride...it's a good one.

There are several stops on that ride but they're somewhat clustered. Once you turn off Noblestown Rd there's only one stop between there and the top of the climb before you descend to the river. (BP at the top, on the left)

On 30 there's a nursery to the left that has some food as well.

That nursery was the perfect place to stop when we did this last year. It was probably around mile 35 or 40 (i'm guessing). Dan, did you mean rt 51? Not trying to be an ass, I just really don't know rt numbers (and i grew up here). It's embarrassing. Also to be clear, is this on the descent down to Hopewell? I think Mayhew, Janaszek, Rob and I were all tucking down that hill. I didn't see a thing.

This is well after the nursery on 30...after Potato Garden crosses 30, it becomes Cork Bocktown Rd, which takes ya down to a left and ends at Rt 151. I think Oscar's route then takes you right on 151 up across 60 and Broadhead to South Heights, then down to Rt 51 by the river.
