People for Bikes ?

Is this a real organization?

http://www.peopleforbikes.org/

or just some way to collect a large list of email addresses? and cash?

Maybe I'm cynical. I prefer supporting local organizations which have stated goals, known leaders and real achievements. Hmm, let me see if I can think of one ...

They started their campaign during the bike summit.

Well, they are the public front of Bikes Belong a bike industry lobbying group. I suspect they have an interest in capturing emails etc. But they also have an interest in promoting bike riding since that's what they do.

One could, I suppose, argue that a business based trade group might be an effective lobbyist at the federal level.

But I agree, support local first.

yeah, don't know exactly what they're going to be doing with that info, but there is no doubt that (if you're going the reform/play the game route) that forming an industry lobbying group will help make sure fed dollars go to this stuff. they've only been contributing to politicos for a couple of years and these politicos already started coming to meet and greets and are more aware of the issues than before. but it's a piss in the ocean compared to what the car/oil/trucking lobby can contribute.

The bike industry had been contributing to and supporting the LAB pretty heavily. I wonder what the LAB wasn't giving them, that inspired them to go try to create their own "grassroots" organization instead.

I like bikes, but I'm skeptical about business interests, be they bicycles or washing machines. I'm not sure that their interests align with mine. Probably more than GM's do, I'll grant.
