Performance Bicycle

ASE, owner of Performance Bicycle and ASI, to file for Chapter 11 ASE/ASI, owner of Nashbar, Perf Bike, Fuji, etc. file to reorg, expecting to close ~40 out of 104 stores. Details in the article. No word yet on whether that would include the East Lib store, which runs a couple regular group rides and supports (IIRC) Pittsburgh Tour de Cure.

Swung by the shop, where staff are firmly convinced they'll be one of the shuttered stores, probably shortly after the new year. Happily, it seems that the staffmembers are making progress on their future plans. Lots of merch is already discounted 10-30%.

Sad. :( I always liking having more bike store options rather than less. Any idea where else I can recycle bike tires/tubes once Performance closes? My guess is that real estate will get more and more valuable over time given how close it is to Bakery Square (And the fact that they finally repaved the parking lot). Wonder what will go in there next?

Does anywhere else besides Performance recycle dead bicycle tires and tubes?

Not that I know of. Banker Supply did so when it was still in business, and they said they gave them to a local artist who used it in his/her work. Not sure what became of that partnership. Perhaps the folks at Free Ride have an outlet for them?

idk.  I know that performance had a contract with some rubber recycler.  My guess is that those all ended up getting shredded and mixed in with shredded car tires for things like rubber surfaces at playgrounds..

I just took my bike to REI today. Yes, I liked the people who worked at Performance. Does anyone think an independent bike shop might move into that store? It is a very convenient location.

Probably not.  That's a huge space. I think they're looking for a bigger tenant for that space than an independent bike shop. My other guess is that most likely the Pittsburgh market is a bit oversaturated with the current bike shops. That space (along with several other shops next to it) used to be part of a grocery store back in the day.

@Eric, Last year, there was talk of a bike shop opening in Aspinwall, but it was decided against for some reason. The two shops in Lawrenceville as well as REI are not too hard for me to get to as well. REI would be pretty difficult to get to if I have a broken bike because it is across town from where I live. The 75 Ellsworth bus goes by my house as well as REI, but that bus regularly gets jam packed the whole way through Oakland and Shadyside. The bus empties out between Ellsworth/Negley and East Liberty Station, fills back up before it gets to East Liberty Blvd./Negley Run Blvd. and can stay packed even through Aspinwall. Overcrowded buses can set off a claustrophobia attack and I do not want that to happen.

Top Gear is 0.6 miles from Performance.
