Perry High School to Oakland

Hi!

Does anybody know of a good way to get from Perry High School down to the Oakland/Shadyside area? I've heard there's a back way to go near 279, but I can't figure out what the best route would be. Anybody been this way before? Thanks!

You can droios Perry hiway and go down East ST (Or Baytree or Gould st to East St). East ST is a little trafficly - when I go up East St, I generally stick to the sidewalk.

At teh bottom of East, R on Ohio to the Commons and L accross the 7h street bridge into town.

Many ways across town and into Oakland.

On Forbes/Fifth

I'd take 7th then R on Penn, L on 6th St, L up the 5th ave bus lane, R past the courthouse over to Forbes (same way the buses go).

About 1 mile out on Forbes, L on Jumonville to the Fith Ave bus lane and out the bus lane.

On the Jail trail.

&th St R on Penn, Left on 6th, across market Square and though the PPG plaza to Market St. L on Blvd of the allies, L on grant, cross Grant to the Jail trail which starts behind a building there.

Either get off teh Jail trail at Bates and go up Bates, or take the Jail trail to the Panther Hollow trail (I can't begin to describe that, if you haven't been on it. There might be signs, I dunno) and up Neville or Joncaire to S bouquet.

Good luck

How I'd do it (since I live about 7 miles N of Perry HS): I'd stick to Perrysville down to the Federal St Ext split. The choice then is (a) brief uphill and STEEP downhill on Federal, or (b) gradual long descent on Perrysville with rotten pavement. Then go around Allegheny Center, take 2nd R (Sandusky), and at Isabella peel L and drop down to the river trail. Ride out to 31st Street Bridge, cross, go up Liberty to Bloomfield Bridge, L Bigelow, and then Bigelow to Craig, and then wherever you're headed to.

Going back, I'd be tempted to ride Downtown and hop an 11D, but if you want to climb it, just get on Perrysville and climb. The traffic is moderate but not irritatingly so, IMHO. Federal's monster hill is there if you want a challenge. Hell, I can't even *walk* it.

To avoid the steep grade (almost) entirely, N Charles St is OK. East Street is like Mick said, very busy; stick to the sidewalk. I don't like that option, either. People live in those weeds.

Nope, Perry Hilltop is not where I'd choose to own a bicycle, sorry. More power to you!

You aren't the guy I saw riding on the inbound shoulder of I-279 about 5:30 Thursday afternoon, are you?

i recommend, on the way back, going up east street and making a left onto suffolk, under 279. take that and make a right onto hazelton, and then a left onto burgess, which will take you over to perrysville.

I bicycled Perrysvile inbound Saturday morning. There is major street construction just above North Avenue that narrows Federal into two just-wider-than-a-bus chutes. Inbound is easy; just take the lane. Outbound, you really would have to take the sidewalk. Or a bus.

When the stupid casino is done, you can cut through riverview and ride DOWN to the old penn on

backroads, taking the n side trail to 31st st bridge and so on.

Spring hill is an empty neighborhood. If you cut through it, it is steep, but there are 0 cars. To Shadyside:

Perry hwy

left on charles st bridge over 279.

Right at T onto sunset

left onto south side ave

Right on mathias (view Mr. Rogers art wall)

DOWN DOWN DOWN a few streets, finding homer.

Right on spring garden.

5 way stop, left on vineal for 2 blocks.

Take pedestrian bridge across 28 to the heinz loft

go down to river ave / bike trail and go left.

31st bridge.

Liberty ave bike lane to shadyside.

No cars until liberty.
