Pittsburgh Bike Buddies and Bike Trains!
Hey everyone,
Biking around Pittsburgh's awesome and we all love catching the breeze but it's not exactly an easy city for novice bikers to start commuting and riding on the streets. I think there's an awesome opportunity we have to develop a volunteer network of experienced cyclists willing to help novice cyclists make the jump from trail/recreational rider to city/commute rider. Check out and volunteer with Pittsburgh Bike Buddies (www.pittsburghbikebuddies.org) to help bridge the gap.
Whether your one of those new riders looking for some help or an experienced rider excited about passing along your expertise, getting involved is super easy -- just fill out a quick form at the website and you'll be linked with a Buddy that meets all of your listed criteria.
In addition to this one-on-one approach, it'd be awesome if we could build upon the good vibes of Bike To Work Day and inspiration like LA Bike Trains (cool NPR interview recently) to develop our own Bike Train network that operates on a more consistent basis. I put in one Bike Train and would love to get a few more going. There's a form on the Bike Buddies website so you can list a Train route you'd like to start as well.
Check out www.pittsburghbikebuddies.org where you can reach out with any questions/comments.
Ride on!

For reference, these ideas were inspired by similar initiatives in Austin, Chicago and LA.

SPC's CommuteInfo (ride sharing) program has been registering people for Bike Pools for years.
One of the advantages of the Bike Pool is that in the event of mechanical issue, (non-weather related) emergency, etc., you are eligible for reimbursement for a trip home/to emergency location via bus, taxi, etc.
