Pittsburgh Police Critical Mass

Yesterday as I was riding home around 6 pm I passed about 25 Pittsburgh Police Officers on bikes riding outbound on Butler between Morningside and the Highland Park Bridge. I was very pleased to see this. There isn't too much bike traffic on that stretch and having a big, well-lit presence of bike cops maybe, possibly, will alert drivers that the speed limit is, in fact, not 70 mph there and it might be worth looking out for cyclists. A few drivers honked before realizing they were cops, which was pretty funny. Anybody know what that was about? As an aside, I passed their peloton with a few cops either cheering me on or taunting me, and then promptly got a flat so they all passed me again.

Karma.  :) I've seen a TON of bike cops around Sq Hill and Tree of Life, especially the week after the shootings. They were travelling in groups of 3 and 4. My guess is that the bike cops must have organized group rides, either for a real reason or "just because." They were probably heading over to the bike oval/zone 5.
