Police ticketing GAP riders at the Waterfront?

It was posted on the facebook page "Great Allegheny Passage / C&O Canal Trail Enthusiasts" that police have been ticketing riders on the sidewalks at the Watefront for not stopping at the trail stop signs. Wondering if anyone can confirm? The poster didn't witness this firsthand, he said "A friend's wife works for a local municipality and warned us about this."

This has happened before; they may be doing it again. One reason to take the road through there.

yes, agreed. They tend to step up enforcement for a bit every summer. I agree -- just take your bike off the sidewalk by a foot and ride on the road, at least in the direction of sandcastle/costco. The whole system with the stopsigns is a bit stupid -- in reality cars should always yield to bikes and peds on the sidewalk. I'm wondering if this was motivated by complaints of the businesses down there, or if it was just whatever municipality down there adding the stopsigns without a traffic study "just because." Whatever it is, they make $$$ off of cyclists every so often.  Who knows if this is even legal?

FWIW, I saw a police cruiser sitting at the "stop and walk your bike" zone on the GAP with the gates, where there is an old parking lot access just before the Eagle viewing area. If that is where the police are targeting cyclists, then there isn't really a practical alternative through there, or is there?

Are you sure they were after cyclists?

Agreed, I think stop signs on trails are stupid. We use the trails to avoid traffic lights and stop signs.
