BE READY FOR ANYTHING
AGAIN! this years PUNK will be self-supported. NO MOTORS! No support vans, no dirt bikes, just bikes, so you better be ready. In fact we’ve brought back the old PPG loop so the course will be longer and harder. Of course we will do our best to provide some beverages on trail but you’d be wise to bring something like a backpack with a mug in it, plenty of liquids, some warm clothing and FOOD. Just like the old days.
whoa, where did you get an applause-o-meter?
Good question. That second post is a quote from Maurice. I have a feeling the meter will be a finely calibrated ear.
hey I'm thinking of doing this for the first time. About how long is the course and what is the skill level? I don't really know anything about it, I just remember hearing about it last year.
It's pretty much an all day event. Skill level will depend partly on the conditions. Very muddy, doesn't take a ton of skill. I did it once years ago and had a great time.
Odds are good you will get wet one way or the other. Be prepared even if it is sunny.
Expect to spend at least 4 hours in woods, there will be standing around to regroup and refuel, mght want to pack some food, drink, and extra clothes.
Stages
1-Singletrack downhill
2-Derby
3-Pavement Yphill
4-Oil well downhill (double track)
5-Cinder road uphill
6-PPG singletrack
7-run up
8-bomb down
9-Dirt road uphill
10-Lollipop loop
11-Endless Valley downhill (singletrack)
Depending on weather and time the last two stages are subject to change.
Lights? You should be back at the firehouse before dark. Never hurts to be prepared though.
man this sounds intense, but I'm sure I'll have fun. Has anyone done this fixed or single?
Everyone does it fixed and single! You'll see more freaky single speeds there than anything else. Crazy costumes too and beer. Best day of your life.
Coaster brake cruisers have been know to show up too.
The first time I ever saw a single speed outside of magazines was at this event, probably 10-12 years ago. If I wasn't on keg hauling duty I would be riding single.
Choppers too.
Hee hee, one specific homemade purple chopper...
If you are a beginner, don't be totally discouraged from coming out for this. There are people to sweep and make sure no one gets dropped. It is a long day in the saddle though, and as Eric says, the difficulty will depend somewhat on the weather. There most likely will be mud, but ice, snow, and/or rain could make things more "interesting."
fair enough. I'm debating whether it would be a good idea for me to do this. I have what seems to be a potentially hard final in my telecom/networking class, but I do want to ride this. I mean, rationally I probably shouldn't. Someone better take a bunch of pictures.
We're going to have some Fluid Recovery drink for people to try afterwards, don't know how well it will mix with beer we'll see. www.livefluid.com we're also going to give out a FRM crank as a prize....need ideas for what though
Maybe the worst costume.
