As a rule, you should be fine, unless you get run over by a train. Keep your ears open. And just wait rather than dash. I've learned that there are some less complicated way to get across. For example, from Glenwood Br to Duck Hollow, you can cross the live tracks by using Vespicius Street, then follow an access road to around the bridge, where the trail starts. There's just a small stretch of ballast to cross. Getting to Vespicius is actually a pleasant roll through a residential area. Note that they've recently put in a new track, but it seems to be mostly for staging. I understand that weekends are pretty quiet. Of course I don't know any of this for a fact, for as you point out you're not supposed to be there. It's just some stuff I occasionally find out about.

The Friends of the Riverfront trail map shows a connection from the Hazelwood Trail to Duck Hollow Trail as "planned". Presumably that includes crossing the railroad tracks below Glenwood Bridge in some manner. I'm not aware of any plans to legitimize the others.

[correction: that should be Vespucius; an embarrassing typo] I took a look at the maps at the site Steven pointed, but didn't see any proposed connection (but maybe I'm not all that attentive). My vague recollection was that the proposed trail would stick close to the river, avoiding any rail crossing; that would have to happen before the jog to 2nd.

There's not much to see, just a pale dashed line near Second Avenue on the last page of the 2014 PDF map on the above page. The Steel Valley Trail Council's map also has a "future non-SVTC trail" connection drawn there, but they draw it closer to the river. I suspect neither is intended to show any definite alignment, just to indicate "connect these trails somehow in the future".
