REI bike shop

Has anyone had any bike tune ups or repairs at REI? I saw that they have several levels of tune ups available. From cheap to not so cheap. Any reviews about this place? Specifically the south side location. Thanks

Yes. I've used both REI locations for tune ups and repairs. Always received excellent service.

Only had one problem in many years of dealing with REI for bike maintenance. That was at the Settler's Ridge location and it is worth mentioning because it was a real problem. I brought a rear wheel in for truing, and when I picked it up, the rubber cup that acts as a dust cap was not there. They ended up giving me a replacement from another brand hub. I did not mind that so much, but when I mounted the wheel to the bike, the disc rotor was grinding against the chain stay. Turns out they lost a spacer washer as well! REI made good ion the repair and, coincidence or not, that mechanic is no longer there. That was almost two years ago and I've been back since (both locations) without any problems. If you do not need that tune-up NOW, there is a periodic half price sale. Makes it real worthwhile.

I'm not a fan. My sister recently bought a bike from the Southside location and I ended up spending thirty minutes making adjustments... stupid little things, like the front reflector being mounted in the wrong place and the rear reflector being mounted upside down... now granted, these are issues that happen during assembly overseas, but the lack of a quality control on both ends is unacceptable in my opinion. Even a new mechanic would have noticed the reflectors being attached incorrectly, the saddle pointing down at an almost 45degree angle, and the brake pads rubbing the rims. That's just not acceptable in m opinion. There are better bike shops than REI. I wouldn't personally recommend them to anyone for repair/maintenance.
