Ride along 28?

Hi, I noticed that you might be able to ride along 28 then go across 31st st. bridge. Has anyone done that? If so, where would you suggest to park? TIA, Lisa

Which end were you looking to start from? The street level parking lot located at the end of Vinial Street, sort of opposite Penn Brewery is now marked "for Brewery patrons and trail users only) so if you wanted to start on the North Side, that is where I would recommend. At the other end, you could park on Washington's Landing, in the public lot at the bottom of the ramp to the island, or you could park at Riverfront Park in Millvale, and ride the trail down from 40th Street. In either case, you'll want to use the 31st Street pedestrian crossing signals (or stop lights) to cross the the far side of Route 28 to pick up the new trail.

To be clear, I would definitely not ride along 28 itself. I suspect you mean the recently constructed concrete trail between 16th and 31st Streets? That's pretty nice, if a bit narrow. I would be very cautious of oncoming bikes and any foot traffic either direction. I've carried a bike up the steps to Goettman Street. A nice alternative to trying to crank your way up Rialto.

I was clearly referencing a ride along the new interpretive trail along Route 28 in my response to the OP!

Yeah, parking at Penn brew and Washington's landing. Kind of dull / noisy / stinky ride there along this path. It's nice to connect from Deuchtown to the strip via the 31st street bridge, avoiding the traffic mess that can happen down there. You're literally a couple feet from 55mph traffic. Keep in mind, the crosswalks will take a few minutes to give you a path across, and like frogger, it will take a few hops. This intersection were never really designed with pedestrians as a focus. Also, don't trust that cars will heed the right of way, they don't expect you there. Watch the ramps, somtimes the visibility is limited

I just used this walkway on Sunday. The North Side group recently picked up the litter that was accumulating along here (thanks!), but there is still some dirt & glass to keep an eye out for. I'll second @Benzo's comment that it's not the most scenic of trails, but it gets you from point A to point B well enough. The aforementioned crosswalks are a pain, but they seem to work well enough.

Can you help me to understand where the western (in-town, downstream) end of this trail is? I think the eastern end is at the 31st bridge? I don't know where/how to get on and off of this. thanks!

The sidewalk along Route 28 connects to the parking lot across Troy Hill Rd from Penn Brewery. Google Maps with bicycling turned on shows it quite well (dark green line): https://goo.gl/maps/EM9ad4HST262

I think you can get on at the other end near the Sarah Heinz house? or maybe that pedestrian overpass that goes over route 28?

If you are on the trail by the river is it a straight shot up Heinz st to N canal? hard to tell on the Google map

Yes, pretty much. There are no signs, so you have to know the turn (just before going under the 16th St Bridge), but yes, turn onto Heinz St, go up between the buildings, and you can access the paved path to the bridge across 28.

You dump out at around Penn Brewery and go across the pedestrian overpass. I like that little trail and have taken it a few times. It isn't that narrow for the most part. You can catch it right next to Rialto. Enjoy the ride.
