A ride to honor, mourn, raise awareness, demonstrate safe riding, and show our strength. The Ride of Silence honors people injured or killed while riding bikes.
Ride of Silence Details
Wednesday, May 28th
6:15-6:45pm: Gather for the ride at the dinosaur (corner of Forbes and Schenley Dr) at the museum in Oakland. Sign a disclosure only to invoke liability insurance for the event (required by the national and local organizers).
6:45pm: A few words on the sadness and relevance of our Ride of Silence. Let’s roll out on time.
7pm: Ride of Silence begins. The route will be a slow and easy 10 miles winding through the East End of Pittsburgh, using several roads that were the sites of past accidents.
Before 8:30pm the ride will conclude.
Start location: Schenley Plaza in Oakland – at Dippy the Dinosaur
Route:

How We Ride in Pittsburgh
Double file, side by side, keeping to a single lane, and to the right of the yellow line where it exists. Stop and wait at all red lights – we’re a big group and will undoubtedly be breaking up and regrouping as we go along. If there is slower traffic in the lane, we’ll just wait for it. Please bring bikes in good repair, as there will be no official mechanical support or transportation.
This ride takes place on city streets, with potholes, surface hazards, motor vehicles and other cyclists riding in close proximity. Participants must use their own judgment and be responsible for their own safety. If at any time, you feel that you can no longer participate safely, please pull off the route and wait until the rest of the ride has passed.
History and Expectations
• On the third Wednesday of May around the world, bicyclists will take to the roads in a silent protest of the carnage taking place on the streets
• Chris Phelan organized the first Ride Of Silence in Dallas in 2003 after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was killed by a passing bus mirror on an empty road
• The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its riders to ride at a slow pace and remain silent during the ride
• The ride hopes to raise bicycling awareness during bike month to motorists, police, traffic engineers, insurance companies, and city officials. The ride is also a chance to honor and mourn, in funeral procession style, those who have already been killed and injured
• The ride requests black arm bands be worn, red only if you have had a bike/motor vehicle crash. Helmets required; lights are mandatory for the ride home. There are no fees charged anyone to participate.

You mean ghost bikes? Several, and there would be more if they hadn't gotten yanked out for one reason or another. Nick Drombosky keeps tabs on a couple, and has been directly responsible for installing all that I have personal knowledge of in the immediate area.
This site maintains a world-wide list. The link is to Pittsburgh area installations.

There was a ghost bike on 51 near the Sewickley bridge but I believe it was recently removed as I couldn't find it on a ride a few weeks ago.

The Ghost bike (in memory of Emily Jancart 7/21/13) on rt51 by the Sewickley Bridge is still there. It breaks my heart as I pass it a lot.

I rode past that bike on the return leg of the 300K a week and a half ago. It's down a little, off the road.
The deaths in the last year are:
Emily Jancart
Jeffrey Zietak
John Pearson
You can see the locations (or at least a route connecting them)
here.
There's a lot to say about each death. Maybe we'll hear some of that tomorrow.

There were a couple of teen girls up Sewickley area somewhere, summer of 2009 or 2010, no car involved, they just ran off the road on a bike, killing one of them. I'm not sure what exactly happened. There's a thread on this board from back then, but I can't recall details at the moment.

It's unfortunate that in many of the cases I just researched, the cyclist was at fault -- riding double on a bike, riding against traffic, not paying attention, riding with headphones on, ignoring stop signs, no lights at night, etc. -- so back to the original post, about demonstrating riding safely. It's not always the other guy's fault.
Further note, these are only the deaths. There were quite a few major injuries, too. For example, the woman who got hit on Liberty Ave in Bloomfield in 2013, second day on the job as an R.N., hit-and-run driver who was never found AFAIK... So many of those. But it's 1:00 a.m., and way past my bedtime.

June 2005 - Francis Andrews, 36, of Pittsburgh, killed when he was hit by a car on West Park Road in Worth, Butler County.

I found an advanced radar screen on the National Weather Service's pages that lets you see what's coming and how soon. Had anyone been looking at this last week, they would have seen that the line of storms was heading well south of the city.

I've adjusted the zoom, the lat/long, and the various layers so as to be the most useful and least obtrusive, though there are a couple of popups that come right up on the first showing, which you have to dismiss or minimize. And it doesn't automatically update on Firefox. But otherwise, it's wonderful. Try it!

We had two council members there, and the Mayor, as well as a police escort. It's clear that Bike Pittsburgh has become a political force to be respected in this city, and we're being pandered to (and I like it).
I was moved to see Iain there, with his family, healthy and riding a bike.

Oh, BTW, some news: the Mayor let drop they're planning a bike lane (? protected ?) from the Schenley Plaza to Greenfield. Presumably that would run Schenley Drive / Panther Hollow Road / Greenfield Road.
Reply (to below): I think he was talking about this year.
jonawebb
2014-05-29 11:43:10
@jonawebb, Did the mayor give any timeframe on that? That kind of bike infrastructure would be fantastic and unbelievably useful.
Another possibility would be a bike lane with a counterflow lane on Overlook through the park. The contra-flow part would have to make use of a sidewalk at the bottom near the mess at the Boulevard but could also work with a bit of imagination.

The bit about a connector from Greenfield to Oakland got me very, very excited. jonawebb, hope you're right about the route... certainly would be a heck of a lot more direct and adaptable to more transportation use cases if that includes Panther Hollow Rd!
And what of the mowed patterns in the field between Bartlett playground and Beacon street? Anyone know if they're going to be putting paths down there? Sure hope so, climbing Hobart and making the left on Beacon stinks.
Would fit together with this potential green lane plan rather beautifully.

There are some diagrams of the storm water retention work they're doing in that field in the big PDF
linked as Section 4 & 5 here. Page 5-7 shows a "mown path" at the bottom of a hillside, but I'm not sure if it's new or where it is exactly. There are also some drawings for a proposal to give Schenley Drive a road diet. It's from 2011 so specific plans today may be different.
